Required Equipment For Composition Courses

Hi,

I'm interested in enrolling to one of the composition courses (like "Impact in Your Photographs" or "Creative Light and Composition") but my camera is a mid-range PS& (Canon A85) - it does have aperture/shutter speed control, but no extra lenses.

Is there a course where this camera will do or should I hold till I get an SLR (might be a while ;))?

Thanks!

While it may be quite limited with only a 3X optical zoom, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to use this camera for a course on composition. Unless you'll be asked to shoot life sized macro or full frame shots of the moon.
Lens focal length plays only a part in the composition of a photo. What did they do before zoom lenses. Either move closer to your subject or furter away, depending on the situation and the composition you're looking for.
You really don't need an expexsive camera to take quality pictures. So long as what you have has good optics and allows you a certain amount of creative control over camera settings, you should be fine. After all, you'll be learning composition, probably the most important and least stresses aspect of artistic photography. I'm sure the great painters all had a fine collection of lenses.

Email the instructor of the course, tell him/her what camera/equipment you have and ask if that will work for the course. I've done it before and they answer quite promptly!

  Hi Nir,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's courses! Great suggestions from Bob and Bob.

Yes, for my class (Creative Light and Composition), your camera will be just fine - since it has a zoom lens that covers multiple focal lengths, and since it has creative controls. According to the Course Q&A for Rob Sheppard's The Wow Factor: Impact in Your Photographs course, it appears that your camera will work fine there too, although you might want to email him directly to double-check.

Thanks again, Nir!
Kerry

P.S. to Bob and Bob: Thanks for your input!!
