Focusing problem


 
 
I've been taking shots of my daughter at swim meets and in a majority of the shots it seems like my focus is short of the subject. Either it falls on the water just short of her, or the focus ends up on the water spray. It is impossible to tell from the camera screen and when I get home I always end up dissatisfied.
I am shooting with a Nikon D70, usually set to continuous focus for these situations. Any suggestions?

Michael H. Cothran 		  I believe your D70 is equipped with a form of "predictive" focusing, meaning it should be capable of following the subject and focusing accordingly.
In all honesty, I don't see a focusing problem with your images on my screen. But assuming there is an issue on your side, I can speculate on three potential issues -
1. Read your manual, and be sure your predictive focusing is turned on, and functioning properly.
2. Check your shutter speed, and be sure it is fast enough to stop the action of your daughter. This would be my first thought - your "out-of-focus" daughter may be the result of subject movement caused by too slow of a shutter speed rather than actually being out of focus.
3. Check which focusing point is activated in your viewfinder, and be sure it is the one covering your daughter.

Susan L. Vasquez 		  I'm thinking it's three too...I also was talking to a friend tonight and he said something about the diopiter (spelling?). I guess I should have sent images that havent' been played with in CS2, but believe me the focus isn't where it should be. You really can't tell either until you get home.
Guess I'll dig out the manual and read more about the focusing point. I really must be missing something. Thanks for the help all :)
