Depth of field

Hello.
They teach you that the depth of field can be varied by:
1.The apperture setting
2.Focal length of the lens
3.Distance to the subject (focusing elements of the lens)

I don't have the depth of field preview button on my camera and my question is addressed to the experts.
Let's suppose I use a 28-105 f2.8 lens and I want to limit the depth of field to the minimum. I have a subject infront of me and I can come really close to it or go pretty far away from it, seeing the subject the same through my camera. The aperture always stays 2.8. I just change the focal length AND the DISTANCE to the subject. Where would be the shallowest depth of field in the range of 50 to 105 mm? Remember, the framing is the same. It really puzzles me. The rule is: The closer you get the less depth of field, but on the other side is the longer the focal length - the less depth of field. I really need an expert on this one.
I would also like you to tell me if there's a golden rule on this one like: Focal length vs. distance, distance wins..

Thank you in advance.

hi, The shallowest depth of field in the range of 50-105 would be at the closest range to the subject, using the longest focal length. regards, donnarae
