Photography Question

Will Wohler

Framing materials

I am looking into selling my photos and would like to have a stock of matted photos ready for sale. Could anyone recommend a website or place where I can purchase precut mats in bulk at a reasonable price? Or, would cutting my own mats be a better deal? I already have a bunch of backing board and bags to put the matted prints in, I just need the matting. Any feedback would be great.
Thanks
-Will-

It has been my experience that cutting mats is cheaper - however, I have access to a mat cutter as I have many relatives that do watercolors and have invested in the cutter. If this isn't jsut a passing phase, the initial investment into the cutter will pay off. I will occassionally look at Michaels for mats and frames when they run big sales or I need one or two right away.

Hi guys, I am also matting some prints to sell, and was wondering what you suggest is the best glue or tape to use on the back of the photo... so the photo won't curl?? Thanks for any suggestions!

JD where are you taping them? They should only be taped across the top. This allows for any movement. Kathy in NH

Thanks Kathy! I've been using a glue stick all around the edges & they start off nice & straight, but it didn't take long for them to curl. I will start using two sided tape and only tape across the top!

Question for Kathy, I matted and mounted abotu 300 photos this weekend. The smaller sizes look fine with a single hinge at the top and the mats ATG'd to the foamcore backing. The larger sizes > 5x7 seem to bubble, like an air cushion behind the photo that I just couldn't force out. I had the 12x18's dry mounted to the backing and they look great. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Will, this is a complex question as there is a cost associated with cutting your own mats--mat cutter, matboard, but most of all---your time. You must decide if you have the time to add this task to your workflow.

I have always purchased my precut mats through www.matcutter.com. There is a limited choice in colors, but I mat all my prints with white mats (best, I think, if you are selling unframed prints through festivals, local galleries, or gift shops). The mattcutter mats are top quality--no overcuts or ragged edges. However, you are limited to fairly standard sizes. I have started offering some prints at 16" x 24" (same aspect ratio as the camera's sensor) so I just purchased a mat cutter and received my first order of matboard and backer foamcore from www.dickblick.com.
Hope this helps.

John
