Photography Question

Will Wohler

photo request

Some one contacted me about purchasing one of my photos, well 15 of the same print, and I don't know if this is legit or not because he is asking that I get back to him immediately without telling me what the photos are for. I plan to pot a copyright on the matting of every print but I don't know why he is so adamant about it. Any insight would be helpful before I give out any more information, his last response is below:

Hello William Wohler,
Thanks very much for your email,The reason I am sending you this email is to make final reconfirmation of the(Sliver of land Hawaii at the day's end. Uploaded on 5/31/2005 4:31:14 PM Made with Nikon N65/F65 SLR Camera size 8 x 10------15 in quantities,no problem if it is 11 x 14 $375) and also to let you know that payment will be by certified Cashier Check. In view of this I need you to email me any information that may be required to send the Cashier Check or traveller check, as I do not want to send the Cashier Check to a wrong location least they gets into the wrong hands. Regarding the shipping, due to the weight of the artwork, cause of the crating and packing some courier service do not render shipment, I have a company that takes care of the pick up of my consignments
for me and ship to my destination , you do not worry about shipping, the company will send down a representative to arrange the sales documentation and the pick up from your end for onward transfer to my destination

I also want to alert you on the fact that you will be receiving an overdraft Cashier Check, which will cover the money for the pickup (pickup and shipping to the final destination) as well as the money to be paid to the company that will take care of the pickup and the documentation with you. So please, as soon as you receive the Cashier Check, go and cash them immediately, deduct the money that accrues to you(artworks & commision), and send the balance to the Head Office of the company that handles the shipment via the nearest Western Union agent in your area. Deduct the Western Union charges from the balance and send the remaining.

The Cashier Check will be in your name to make it easier for you to receive
payment, deduct your money for the artworks and send the balance via Western Union as regards my earlier direction, please reconfirm your details one more time. I will give you the details of the company that you will send the balance of the money to once I get a reply and agreement that you will send the money via Western Union money transfer after you cash the Cashier Check.
Once the money is received by the agent, the shipping agent will contact you immediately to arrange the documentation as well as the pick up immediately. So in view of the above, here are some of the details I will need for final issuance of the Cashier Check to you.

(1) Full Name
(2) Mailing address, not p.o.box please
(3) your direct telephone number
(4) acceptance of my offer

Once you get back to me with all the above, the Cashier Check will be issued out immediately and it will be
sent to you . Hope to hear from you immediately.
Regards,
Alex.

Thanks Dr. S. I have decided to not accept his offer because of the other threads on this sight and my own suspicious inclinations. I'm glad I looked into it because I was about to go make the prints today. I'm glad I am apart of BP.

I also received the same e-mail from Alex. After the second e-mail from him with the instructions I felt that this was a scam and told him I wasn't interested.

I think it is a safe bet, given the numerous posts at BP on this topic, that just about any request you ever receive that is THIS complicated, should always be treated as a scam. (I just think if I wanted to purchase an image from a BP'er, I'd write something like "Hi, I love your image 'abc', and would like to buy a copy; do you have 8x10? How much do you sell for? What are shipping charges to VA?" etc.
But it is the consisten mention of ANY kind of additional transfer of funds (other than customer payment in full to you) or other unusual payment handling, that should be regarded as highly suspicious. As well as that whole "private freight company" thing; a big red sign, to me.
I'd say better safe, than sorry---afterall, you don't need a purchase from your portfolio THAT badly to ever get involved in something that raises any suspicion within you.

Hi It have been told to me that what happens is they send you the check for a large amount and you return the diff. And then the check is rubber. Because the bank only checks to see if there is fee to cover at that time. But by the time the check gets over seas there is no money to cover check. :O)

I also got an email from Alex James and Mike Moore asking the exact same thing. They both wanted 15 copies of one of my flower photos. I was suspicious, but wasn't sure until I got the email about the convoluted shipping instructions, etc. Amazing what people will.

By responding to Alex email, I have had a lot of spam in my email account. So set up an email account from hotmail or yahoo before answering to these people that are interested in buying photos so they can spam your fake account instead.

Alex James are Mike Moore are scams people. I'm in IT securities and I've seen this 1000s of times. Stay away from anyone who wants to buy your prints and have you send them money. They are buying from you, they send you the correct amount of money and you don't give change.
