The Canon 28-135IS - is it worth the money? Is the Canon 28-135mm IS worth the money? Or should I go for fixed focals like the Canon 300L4, 24mm/2.8 or 20mm/2.8, 135mm/2, 85/1.8)? What I want from the 28-135 is the IS function, all other lenses are too heavy for me to hold, or too pricey. And, if you could direct me to some photos taken with a 20mm and a 24mm, so that I can see the effect both have on pictures...

The IS (Image Stabilizing) function is too cool. For those of you who haven't heard of this awesome new technology, it allows you to hand hold the lens a bit more often than before. In some situations where a tripod would be required with a normal lens, these lenses will capture a relatively sharp image by correcting for camera shake in the lens. Although the price is a bit high, most photographers I know have greatly enjoyed their IS lens. The 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is no exception. Traditional photographers still argue that fixed focal length lenses will produce the sharpest image. They may be right but most people can rarely - if ever - tell the difference between images shot with a high-quality zoom lens and a fixed lens.
