Photography Question

Kelly Barclay

Anyone with the Canon 5D!!

Considering buying the 5D. I've owned the 20D for 15 months. I love it but want to use it for a backup. ( I do weddings) so I figure why get another one instead get a better camera.

But my question is to anyone that has the 5D - do any of you regret getting it? Is it worth the extra money?

Thanks!

Good friends just bought it and love it!!! I actually did a photoshoot and tried it for about 20 frames and was very impressed. One was upgrading from a Nikon and took a huge $$ loss but is loving it and pleased he made the jump (sorry Nikonites). The other had the 10D and is very pleased as well. They both photograph in all conditions but concentrate on model shoots in homes and with vehicles(for a publication). The camera would be great for weddings but make sure you check on your lenses because I think there is a compatibility issue with some lenses. Conclusion...I think it's a great camera for weddings and portrait.

Hi Kelly - I recently switched from Minolta to the 5D and I love the camera! IMHO it is well worth the price and I am very pleased with the results I have achieved since getting the camera about 5 weeks ago. FYI: in doing my research and checking at my local camera store I discovered the all the EOS lenses will fit this model and work well. The 5D has a full sensor so some of the older model "digital only" lenses will not work with the camera. On Canon's web site they have a listing of all the lenses and compatability issues that may affect different EOS models.

Thanks for your responses. All my lenses will work with this camera- except the kit lens that came with my 20D but that's no big loss! Ha

Kelly, I bought the 5D a few months ago after owning the 20D for about a year. I'm also doing the same thing-- keeping it as a backup camera for wedding. I LOVE the 5D. In my opinion it is well worth the money to upgrade. Good luck.

Kelly, You said you use the 5D for weddings, Do you use the canon 580 exflash with the canon battery pack attached to the flash? If so Does it give you continuos shooting at all times? Also so Is the 5D great for sports shots? In the process of purchasing a digital camera and was looking at the 30D but like that the 5d has 12.8mp & full frame of a 35mm.

Looking to get into wedding or any type of photogrpahy besides the medical phototgrAPHY I do all day. I would still love to use my Film Camera as back up(elan 7n) sometimes or just for the original black & white film. I've been getting different feed back on what equipment I need. Since you shoot weddings and use the 5D what's in you bag for a typical wedding as far as battery pack for flash etc.
Trying to follow a wedding photographer first , but they're so afraid to let you tag alone.

Thanks

Thanks

Hey Jyan. suggest to the photographer that you'll assist and help lighten their load. For example say that you'll take care of the groom while he/she takes care of the bride.
or something like that and make yourself valuable him/her. like when I started, I followed the grooms family, groomsmen, groom on the day of the wedding. and my shots were shots that would normally not be gotten. but because the main photographer focused on the bride and I focused on the groom the whole day then the main photographer didn't have to bust her butt to be everywhere at once. and get to know who the family members are. lots of times the brothers and sisters etc. of the bride/groom aren't in the wedding and photographers don't find out who's who. the main photographer can take the main shots but you can take the time to find out for example: who the godparents are or who the aunts/uncles are that flew in from out of state. those people are very important and always overlooked! Oh a big thing is make sure you take pictures of the bridal party with their dates, mates, boyfriend / girlfriend. those sell!when brides and grooms as well as other relatives see our proof book they are touched when they see those shots included and they buy them. I proved to the photographer that I was valuable. I started out that way and now I'm working for the photographer shooting my own weddings! Just a suggestion!

Thanks to everyone for their help. I did get the 5D and am loving it so far. Today was the first I got to play - snapped some of my girls playing outside. I love the huge screen and other neat features the 20D lacks.

Deb- you answered way better than I could have!

Hello Kelly, Do you use canon battery pack for your flash(possilby 580ex)
or do you use the quantum packs? One photographer says he don't like relying on batteries, but the other stuff is expensive. What extra gadgets do you use to shoot a wedding?

Thanks

Hey Jyan, I think I can help you out here, I've photographed a couple weddings, a baptism and a lot of bikini competitions. I use a Quantum Turbo with my flash. You still need to have the 4 batteries in the flash and the Quantum is on my belt. It's a great addition and I don't know what I'd do without it. I can say the benefits are many but the unit is heavy and expensive. Your flash will recycle immediately and last for hours, the in flash batteries last about 4X as long.

I love my 1Ds Mark II and its really helped build up the right side of my body. I don't get tired lifting 6 beers to my mouth like I used to before buying it. C'mon Tareq you know it's the best there is, I did a comparison with my friend against his H1D Hasselblad and my 1Ds Mark II and it was even better than the Hasselblad. He bought the 1Ds because of what he witnessed.

I know this discussion was about the 5D, but I am looking into getting the 30D. Are the differences between the 5 and the 30 enough to warrant the difference in price? I asked a guy at the camera store and he said that the 30 was just as good as the 5. What are your thoughts?

I suppose it comes down to what you plan to do with your camera and what your future plans are. Personally, I looked at both cameras, but the 5D won hands down for many reasons, not the least of which was the full size sensor. I’d suggest that you go to another camera shop and look at both cameras and, if they allow you to, take some shots with each. My local shop is really good this way, they allowed me to take both cameras into their parking lot and shoot a few frames. Of-course, they know me, so they knew I wasn’t going to run off with the cameras! I love my 5D and am glad that I spent the extra money – a lot of extra. Selling points for me: full size sensor VS standard digital; 12.8 mega pixels VS 8.2; faster fps (I do a lot of wildlife) and the more rugged exterior – my interests keep me outside in even bad weather.
