That is a question that no one can answer for you. It's a matter of personal choice or preferrence.
You may want to take a gander at the camera calculator under the resources tab, to first of all try to narrow down what type of camer will suit your needs. Point & shoot, advanced P&S or DSLR. You wouldn't want to put money out for a DSLR just to take the occassional holiday or birthday pictures.
Decide what kinds of pictures you would most likely shoot then check out the specs on various models to find out which ones would serve that purpose best. Then read the User reveiws on those models to get a real world critique rather than just a bunch of specifications like you would from a magazine.
Once you have narrowed your search down to two or three models, then go to the store and handle them. Hold them up to your eye as if you were shooting with them. Check out all the controls and make sure they're easy to understand and easy to use while you're shooting. Find out which one fits comfortably in your hand. That would be the best way to decide on which model is right for you.

Personally, I use Canons' 20D and I love it. Others swear by Nikon. But I won't get into that. Find out the facts. Read what real world users say about the models. Then go play with them yourself to see which one is the one you want.

Hope this helps.

Bob
