Blown out background??? help!!!

Ok, so it is 2:00 in the afternoon, I find some shade but the background is so bright. What can I do to make my background come out with better coloring?
When try my depth of field at f10 or more I have a harder time seeing the subjects even with a flash.
What do I do?

This isn't a depth of field problem. Rather, it's a basic brightness level problem. To solve it, you either need to bring your foreground brightness up to the background level to get it balanced and do that with electronic flash for example, OR bring your background DOWN to the foreground level of brightness. To do that in this situation, you need a split neutral density filter or something along that line and a tripod to set the camera on in order to ensure the neutral density filter cuts across the background in a straight line.
Okie dokie? ;>)
