Photography Question

Jobs

I am wondering how you find a photographic job. I have done internet searches but they are not going where I need to go. Are there any specific websites or companies that announce job openings?

Thanks,
Dana

I'll tell ya DG, it's like finding any other kind of job in that persistence pays off as does targeting a niche in the market and knowing how to self-promote yourself really goes a long way.

There are sites that operate specifically for the benefit of experienced photographers and carry ads placed by agencies and other firms. But I'm not aware of specific sites that announce like staff photographer positions.

All I can tell you is that if you want a full-time position with an outfit willing to have you start as an apprentice, you're really going to have to target specific firms and promote the hell out of yourself with specific portfolios that take into account and demonstrate publishable work that they want to see.

Unfortunately, the former staff photographer positions have fallen victim to budget cutbacks and they rarely exist these days even at the premier publications that can pick and chose photographers from the cream of the crop. Moreover, editors just don't have the time to train staff members, especially photographers, as they used to, say 30 or even 15-20 years ago. It's just a fact of photographic life. Plus, there are more people who with Photoshop and a digital point and shoot THINK they're photographers and they're in there competing for the positions you may be looking for and essentially muddying up the photographic gene pool. [Sorry, I find myself seasoned enough that I can actually BE that arrogant...LOL)

Oh and BTW, if you haven't got one yet, I strongly recommend a 4 year college degree in fine arts, photojournalism, something of that ilk along with background in business admin, perhaps accounting, and/or business law. Something you can fall back in if the market goes further south on you. Remember Dana, this is a really really tough industry. Thicken your skin to handle a lot of rejection, get a mitt and get in the game. After a while, and a lot of hard knocks and developing your skills, you'll land a gig somewhere. Good luck.

Take it light.\
Mark
