How much to charge for portraits?

I set up my studio equipment at church and took everyones pictures for the church directory. Now people are calling me to order packages of their pictures. I haven't started my business yet. But I figured this would be the best opportunity to start. What kind of prices should I ask for? Also what kind of packages should I offer. Example: 1 8X10, 2 5X7's, and 8 wallets for $15.00? Is this reasonable?

No, that's not reasonable. That's cheap! I would probably double that price and it would still be fairly cheap.

Erin, Having a business implies you want to make money--otherwise you are just a non-profit hobbiest. You should be compensated for the use of your equipment, your knowledge and expertise, as well as making a profit on the printing of the pictures. Just a thought....

  Erin,
Please remember it is not expected that you can compete with the same pricing as large portrait companies.
these prices are qouted expecting thier employees to turn it into a 100.00 and up package-the company does NOT want to really make that $9.95 price tag.
I have done on site printing of standard portraits( no frills) for Church and School events as follows(AND THIS CHEAP)
1 8x10 2 5x7's and 9 wallets of the first pose $25.00
Pick the pose: $35.00
Mix any up to 3 poses : $45.00
(now that means 8x10 can be 1 pose, 2 5x7s each a different pose and wallets can be made all of 1 pose)
or everything we shoot on a disk for $50.00 ( 8 shots) to $75.00 ( 12-15 shots).
and that is the one most go for , that way they get anything they want .
So when doing this make sure you do some standard and then do some HIGH Appeal.
if you have 20 families or more you can afford to do this, again I use a Epson R300 printers, and High grade paper for Costco (try it it's grat paper at #69) and I print there.
If I burn a disk there is a cost of .10-.25 cents per burn and theres where you make your money.
Again sets of approval shots (at least 3) should be in each set and do remember the more verity the higher your sales.
Wishing you the best of luck in yor venture,
Debby

**more on this subject and approval sets is on the studio thread 1-21.
