Photo Discussions Is partipation in the photo discussions a requirement to placing in the monthly contests?

Nope. You can enter a photo a day into the contest, even if you don't chat with the rest of us ;) Or, if you meant, "placing" as in making the rank of Finalist, Second, First or Grand, no---photo discussions are not considered in the judging process. The merits of your photo stand alone, chat or no chat.
