Canon 15mm Fisheye and 20D lens factor?

How does the 1.6x lens factor of the 20D affect shots taken with the Canon 15mm fisheye lens? I'd imagine that it's the same as all other lenses, but I've never tried it before. I've seen some amazing pictures that I know for a fact were taken with a full-frame Nikon camera and the 10.5mm Nikkor fisheye lens. Is it impossible for me to get those same kind of results, with regards to the distortion and the wide-angle (I'd like to see more in the frame) with my 20D and the lens factor? Am I right to assume that the Canon 15mm fisheye on the 20D will not show as much as the overall scene as it would on say the 1Ds Mark II, and that even the 1Ds wouldn't show as much as the Nikon 10.5 on a D2X or other Nikon full-frame camera?

The Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 Fisheye is a DX lens designed for their digital SLRs, which are APS-C sized. It will not fill the frame of a 35mm film Nikon.

The 20D will crop the image from the EF 15 f/2.8 Fisheye, so it will not give full 180 degree diagonal view. Canon's EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM is rectilinear rather than fisheye, so it isn't any wider view. As yet, the Nikon 10.5 fisheye is a unique lens. Canon does not make a 180 degree diagonal fisheye lens for their APS-C digital SLRs, nor does any other camera or lens maker. The Nikon 10.5 DX can be mounted and used with an adapter, but only wide open since it is a G lens with no on-lens aperture control.

The only alternative for Canon users is to use an 8mm circular fisheye lens, such as Sigma's 8mm f/4 EX (available in Canon EF mount) or the Peleng 8mm f/3.5 (usable in Av and M modes with an adapter). The 8mm circular fisheyes give 180 degree diagonal (and horizontal) view on APS-C digitals, but vignette in the corners, so require some cropping to match the frame filling image of a diagonal fisheye like the Nikon 10.5.

Thanks Jon. I knew you'd be the guy with the answer. Do you know if there is a way to take a photo taken with a wide angle lens, say the 10-22mm EF-S lens, or the 14mm f/1.4L lens, and add the distortion to the photo in post-production using software or plug-ins?

So, if a 20D has an APS-C size sensor, and the 5D has a full-frame 35mm sensor, what would you call the 1D Mark II's sensor? Just curious if there's a designation that size sensor with the 1.3x lens factor. Anyway, are you saying that teh NIkon 10.5mm fisheye lenshas the Nikon equivalent of a Canon EF-S lens? So her is the big question - If I were to use a 5D or a 1Ds Mark II, could I get the same results with Canon's 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens as I would be able to with the Nikon 10.5m DX fisheye lens on a full-frame camera?

I don't know if there is a digital editing procedure to "fish" an image, but would assume so.

The 1D-series sensor is 28.7mm x 19.1mm. Since it is the only camera ever marketed with this sensor size, there isn't a compelling reason to define a general category for it. However, I've seen this referred to a couple times as APS-H size (30mm x 17mm) because both image frames have a diagonal measure of ~34.5mm. Still, the 1D isn't really APS-H since the -H format has a different aspect ratio (16:9) than the 1D (3:2). The "crop factor" of the 1D is closer to 1.25 than 1.3, Canon simply rounds it to one decimal.

Yes, the DX series lenses are Nikon's equivalent to EF-S, or vice versa since DX came first. ;-) The DX lenses project a smaller image circle that covers the APS-C sized sensor of their DSLRs, but not the full-frame of their film cameras. The EF 15 f/2.8 Fisheye on a 5D or 1Ds would give the same results as Nikon's 10.5 f/2.8G DX Fisheye on their DSLRs.

in ps cs2 there is a filter to distort your shot to be more "fishy" I have used it. its pretty cool, dont know if its on cs or ver7 or earlier or not... I have the sigma 10-22 rect. and its great but not a round image.. it is on my FF elan7 but I dont really go for that look.. it does distort nicly though..really wide too.
Craig-
