Photography Question

Diana Weiss

How to charge for use of my photos in publicity

Several resorts are interested in using my photographs in their printed and online PR material.

Can someone give me some guidelines on how to charge for my work? One of the popular shots is the one I've downloaded here.

There are many factors that go into this, most you probably need to consider and without going into them here, I'll tell you a couple of good places to get started in figuring this out. You probably need to go back and ask your prospective client some questions as well. If you're dealing with an ad agency or PR firm, even in-house, they should be able to answer your questions and freely do so. If not, then you're probably dealing with amateurs and I wish you good luck in educating them to professional standards and codes of ethics.

First, Advertising Photographers of America send members a survey a few years back. The specs and prices are still a valid reference. http://www.apanational.com/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3290

And, ASMP.org offers a number of excellent publications for sale to our members and the general public on business practices, usage rights, copyrights, and determining value to clients. If you qualify for either organization's membership, I strongly suggest joining if you intend to do this sort of work regularly. I've been a member of both for many years and they're excellent professional groups.

Also, if you haven't done so already, you need to copyright your work. http://www.copyright.gov. Look for forms and info on FA (fine arts).

You can also do a search here at BP.com and find a ton of info on pricing. Just look around.

Take it light.

  Hi Mark,

I read through most of the stuff under Visual Arts on the Copyright.gov site you listed, guess they moved it from Fine Arts to Visual as that is where I found photography.

I'm trying to save myself a phone call and maybe you can answer my question. It was hard to tell on if you had to submit a copyright document for each photograph or if you can submit just one and have it cover all photographs you take. Do you know the answer?

Sorry Tina, I meant to say Visual Arts but was thinking fine arts photography at that moment I guess.

Yes, you can batch your copyright requests and don't need to do one at a time. When you shoot a job with hundreds of images, that could be a real time burner. Lol! !!

Thanks Mark! The Government is always looking for ways to get more money out of us. Too bad you can't just apply once and have that apply to all pictures you take for the rest of your life. :-)

It is at least good to know that you can batch a job or 2 together.
