Black and white sunsets

As an assignment for my photography class we have to take pictures of a scene that would portray a new beginning. I would love to take pictures of a sunrise or sunset. I know some basics about it and have taken pictures of sunsets in color before but never in black and white. I'm wondering what the differences would be and/or what kind of filters you would recommend if any. I was also wondering if you had any ideas on how to make my enlargements more unique as I know that sunset and sunrise have become quite boring.
thanks,
katie

Sounds as if someone is doing a good job of teaching photography. Don't worry about tricks and filters. You can use a harder or softer paper under your enlarger later. Sunsets are pretty contrasty, anyway. Look at my shot "clammer" in Galleries/member galleries/doug nelson. Sunsets in B&W can be quite dramatic. Give your image some depth. Have a subject, maybe in the foreground, against a sunrise, and vary your exposure so you get what you want. Shoot over and under, and pick the best one. If depth-of-field is essential in your image, hold your f16 or whatever, and vary the exposure with your shutter. I took a reading of the sky, and one of the sand, and split the difference. Let us see what you come up with.
