How do you spot meter on a Minolta maxxum 5

I have a minolta maxxum 5 and would like to know to spot meter the camera so that my subjects in the foreground are not washed out by the bright background (ex. sun is behind me and I am on the beach. The sun's reflextion off the sand makes portraits look under exposed).

  (a) you can use flash in such situations to add fill light to backlit subjects.
or
(b) press the SPOT-AE Lock button (upper right of the camera's back) to activate the Maxxum 5's spot meter in order to meter off your subject and ignore a bright background. Spot metering is explained on pp. 77-80 of the Maxxum 5's instruction manual.
or
(c) You can also add exposure to backlit subjects using the Exposure Compensation control (pp. 84-85).
