How to make a young model relax Yesterday I had a diificult time getting a 10 year old boy to relax or smile during a photo session. Although they were my friends boys they did not know me. I did spend time getting to know them, did a little bit of joking and talking during the session. Also tried to get them to interact so not all shots would have him looking at the camera. I did not use a puppet as I thought he was a little too old! Any help on avoiding this situation next time would be much appreciated!

It's your personality vs. his. Next time, meet them in advance with one or more parents around, spend some time getting to know them before you even load a camera. Then, on the day you shoot, interact with them based on what you talked about earlier. Mark

Thanks Mark I will think of this next time. Strange as it may seem the images of this young guy not smiling make for interesting compositions. Unfortunately that's not what his parents want to buy!

There's a photo Diane Arbus did called "Boy with a hand grenade" about 1963-65, I think. You WANT to see that photograph. Look it up. It's perfect. Bet his parents bought one though. ;>0)) Mark

Ask him about his girlfriend, or if he has one.... works like a charm every time!

I have found that giving kids “The preverbal carrot at the end of the string” helps. I start of with letting telling them that after we take a few calm pictures I’ll take a few goofy pictures and show them the pictures right away. For older kids I have even let them take a few of me and/or the parents with my camera. Most photographers cringe at that idea, but it has help and even produced some good fun pictures.
