I don't have your camera, but I think you should be able to switch to manual focus, but keep the exposure mode dial to the Macro Mode. This way, the camera will still determine the exposure for you. If this doesn't work, you could try Av mode. In this mode, you will need to set the Aperture (f-stop) and the camera will select the appropriate shutter speed. Using only natural light, you will probably need to use a large aperture (small number) like f2.8 or f3.5.

I believe manual focus is available in all modes other than [AUTO]. I suspect the "dirty look" you got in P, Av, Tv, M were due to a high ISO setting and/or settings for Photo Effect and Contrast/Sharpness/Saturation that do less image processing than the defaults in the automatic modes.

Hi, Cindy. I have a Canon Powershot Pro 1, and if you look at the back of the camera, just beneath the on/off/playback button, there is another button with a blue microphone and the letters MF above it. That will take you to manual focus in all shooting modes. (The microphone function on the same button works in playback mode). If you still have your users manual, you can find the info in there on pages 113 - 115. Hope this helps. :)
