Photography Question

SLR and DSLR lenses... interchangable?

Hello

this is a really stupid question - but I am new to the digital world. I prefer my old school SLR with which I am now familiar and it takes great shots.

IF I was to buy a digital SLR, are ANY of the lenses interchangeable between my minolta SLR now adn IF I was to buy a digital SLR?

I find it silly to buy all new lenses just for a digital camera, when my SLR works fine. I am curious... I do have to admit digital is much more convenient for certain things...

Thanks in advance!

If your current Minolta SLR is an autofocus Maxxum (Dynax outside the USA), then YES - Minolta 5D, 7D and the soon to be announced line of Sony Alpha DSLRs use the Maxxum lenses. If your current Minolta SLR is a manual focus SR- or X-series, then NO. There are no digital cameras that can mount the old MC/MD/X mount lenses.

Don't be afraid to make the leap to digital even if you have to replace your entire system. My SLR system is Canon with old FD manual focus lenses. While I love my old Canon system and I have nice lenses I'm really enjoying the newer autofocus lenses of today. I'm not sorry I took the leap! BTW, keep your film system. I'm sure you'll find it's still useful occasionally.

Davina: Yes, your Maxxum lenses will work fine on the Maxxum 5D or 7D OR the Sony Alpha digital SLR.

Sony should be announcing that Alpha camera in a month or so.

Thank you Peter - Do you know much about the Sony Alpha? Is it worth waiting for, or should I look into the digital 7D minolta?

Many thanks

Davina: I will be getting a Sony Alpha for a few days next week.

However, I had to sign a secrecy agreement. So, I cannot provide any advance info.

I would wait until the Alpha is announced. You can then make a decision as to that one or the Maxxum 7D camera. The Sony may be more expensive and you may find the Maxxum 7D to be just fine.

Remind me in mid June and I'll let you know what I think - after the Sony Alpha has been announced.

  thats ok - I understand :)

I'm just wondering what the big difference is going to be? I haven't seen any advertising for the Alpha so I am wondering how it is SUPPOSED To compare to the minolta?

And you won't, until Sony announces that camera.

Another month or so.

Keep an eye on www.dpreview.com A News site that always lists new camera announcements.
