Steve, the common wisdom is that DSLRs are set to do a minimal amount of processing on the images, leaving it to the user to work in post-processing (like Elements) and do the sharpening there. In general, it is usually considered best to do the sharpening process after you've done any resizing, color corrections, etc. P&S cameras, meanwhile, are aimed at the consumer who would just like to get pictures out of the darn camera right away without fussing with computer programs. As such, the P&S cameras are internally set to sharpen in-camera. So what you did, setting the D200 to perform more in-camera sharpening, is exactly the way to approach the problem you state. Remember, it's not a 'problem" per se - it's more a matter of understanding why the equipment comes out of the box set the way it is.
