Nikon D200 sharpening settings

I'm bummed. The default sharpness setting on my new Nikon D200 gives what I feel is less than adequate sharpening. I sharpened the second picture here in PS Elements 2.0 and consider that the quality I should get from the default setting. Yeah, I can experiment with the custom settings to see if things improve, but is there anything else that could cause this fuzziness? Lens:18-70mm ISO 400 About 5.6 f-stop 1/400 second. I'm curious if other D200 owners have seen this.

Steve, the common wisdom is that DSLRs are set to do a minimal amount of processing on the images, leaving it to the user to work in post-processing (like Elements) and do the sharpening there. In general, it is usually considered best to do the sharpening process after you've done any resizing, color corrections, etc.

P&S cameras, meanwhile, are aimed at the consumer who would just like to get pictures out of the darn camera right away without fussing with computer programs. As such, the P&S cameras are internally set to sharpen in-camera.

So what you did, setting the D200 to perform more in-camera sharpening, is exactly the way to approach the problem you state. Remember, it's not a 'problem" per se - it's more a matter of understanding why the equipment comes out of the box set the way it is.
