Photography Question

Michele N. Yamrick

Photographing the full moon....

I need my memory seriously refreshed, maybe I need some ginko biloba or something, but anyways...I photographed the full moon once with my Nikon D50, and the shot came out really good for a first attempt..but like a total ditz, I did not write down my settings. Has anyone here photographed the moon, with either film or digital, and if so, what were your settings? I just need ground to go on, to 'find' my setting I used...any help will be truly appreciated!
Michele

I have done this too! Took a great full moon shot, couldn't remember settings, and haven't been able to do it since! Only I lost the photo on my old computer! AAaagghh! I learned the hard way (what other way is there) to 'save' your work. So whoever answers this question, thanks for the help from me too! :O)

Here's the short answer: The moon is lit by sunlight, so start with the "sunny 16" rule (shutter speed equivalent to your ISO at f/16) and backet a couple of stops either way. Generally a 1/2 stop to a stop under will give you better details of the moon's surface.

  Full moon 100 ISO
f/5.6 1/125 sec.

Quarter phase moon 100 ISO
f/4 1/125 sec.

Places moon on gray scale zone VI

Hi Michelle:

The, hopefully, uploaded shot of the full moon was taken with my 100-400mm lens. ISO 100. 1/100 sec @ f/7.1. Hope this helps.
Also, for greater detail and clarity, if your camera allows, shoot in B&W, or convert in your editing program.

Bob
