Photography Question

Tim R. Plankenhorn

Canon 24-70mm L or 24- 105mm L

So hears the question, I am purchasing my very first Canon lens that will be used with a canon 5d. I will be purchasing either Canon's 24-70mm f/2.8L or the Canon 24-105mm f/4L. I was just wondering if there were any real advantages using one or the other besides the obvious focal length and speed. I am looking for the best all around lens, that I will get the most use out of. Any advice would be helpful thank you

Tim

No difference beyond the obvious. If you need/want the shallower depth of field and 1 stop faster shutter speeds (to freeze action) that f/2.8 gives over f/4, then go with the 24-70. Otherwise, the 24-105 is just as sharp, has the same build quality, has longer tele reach, and IS (including panning mode) to elinimate blurring from camera shake.

I would take into consideration any other lenses you might own, or plan to buy, and how well either zoom 'fits.' The 24-105 makes a much better 'one-lens' outfit, and if you see yourself in situations where you must travel light, then this could be a determining factor.
If you own, or plan to buy the 70-200L, the 24-70 would probably 'fit' better creating a great 2-lens outfit. If you had your eyes on the 100-400L, the 24-105 would be a better choice for creating a 2-lens outfit.
Tough decision.

I'll add another wrinkle to your question: I purchased my 5D just about two weeks ago and purchased the Canon 28-135mm 3.5 lens on the advice of the owner of a local camera shop - he usually points me in the right direction and told me that this lens is considered, by many, to be among the best of the Canon line. It has the Canon IS which is really nice. I really like the lens! I also have the 20mm as my wide angle and a Sigma IS 200-500 long lens. I am hoping to get a true macro - probably the 50mm f 2.5 with the life size converter. Anyway, this is where I am at the moment if its any help!

Well I appreciate the feedback from everyone it was suely helpful. I think I am going to go for the 24-70 for the faster f stop and the 70-200L is next on the list. Thank you all so much.
