contests and sharpness looking at some of my shots in the gallery.. I have entered into this months contest, they are kinda soft.. I can assure you they are not this soft on either my web site, my computer or at POTN where I uploaded them for critique. Why is it they look so soft here and how can the judges tell the pic isnt out of focus? do they look at sharpness? hope not! Craig-

Hi Craig---I'm sure you've seen in the BP threads, the "480" rule... are you pre-sizing your BP files to 480 on the short side, before uploading? (vs. uploading something larger that BP will then be forced to shrink?)

Hi Craig, I've noticed the same thing happens to my photos at this site (and ONLY this site) I've even started sharpening the files that I upload here a little more than the ones I send elsewhere. (so they look "too" sharp on my monitor but look better when they show up on the website) I was told at one point that a few copies are made of our images when we upload them to bp and the one we see is actually a "copy" which results in a softer image - but, like you, I always wonder what the judges are seeing and why it has to be this way. I've heard lots of other photographers mention the softness of the uploaded images as well... Hopefully, someone from bp will read this and respond.

In that same vein... Craig, are you uploading TIFF (or another lossless format) files? (vs JPG, which is not a lossless format.)

doesn't matter (at least for me)... I always use Tiff files here and they always look softer....

750 to 800 on the long end. and I only upload jpegs. Im just afraid they will look out of focus to the judges. Thanks! Craig-

If you can, try some uploads that you specifically resize to 480 exactly on the short end (let the long end be what it will be) and save as TIFF...

I tried that little test Christopher described on a previous post. Re-sizing to 480 on the short end DOES help to maintain the sharpness of an original image uploaded to this site. This link will show an example: http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=23293

I've been unable to upload Tiffs. I'll have to keep trying, but it just doesn't seem to work.

James, I've had trouble with TIFFs myself, so I've been saving as PNG ( another lossless format ) and that works fine.

I wondered about that also. My images are "soft" after being uploaded. I assumed they resaved & resized each image at lower compressions once uploaded but always wondered why the competition appeared sharper. Thanks for this information, I now know about the 480 rule. I just wonder if I should re-upload all my photos at 480 on the short side now, or do the judges actually judge on the original version submitted? Anyone know?

It's been my experience even if I resize to 480 on the short side that my photos will be somewhat soft if I upload a TIFF. Makes no sense and I can not explain why this would be so. Heck, maybe it's my imagination. Still, everything I upload to the contest is 480 on the short side and JPEG.
