How to whiten teeth in Photoshop Elements 2.0

I recently took Senior pictures of my nephew. They turned out great. However, those with a big smile, especially close-ups, show his yellow teeth (they are very yellow). I have Adobe Photoshop elements 2.0, but I am fairly new at it. I am thinking this could be addressed in that program, but unsure. I would want it to look very natural. Any suggestions?

That's actually simple. Duplicate the layer once or twice. Twice because some people don't want to work on the original layer in case the mess up.
Use curves or levels to lighten the layer just below the top layer. Lighten until the teeth look natural. Put a layer mask on the top layer, then erase the teeth with the brush tool with the tool option set to maybe %50 to make it easier to blend at the gum line. Erase over the teeth until they look the way you want.

Thanks for directing me to the layers program. Here's what I ended up doing, and I think the result turned out pretty well.

I took the magic wand tool and selected the front row of teeth.

I went to the layer option.

I selected "new adjustment layer"

Then I selected "hue/saturation"

Because the teeth were so yellow, I turned the saturation to about -19. Then I lightened to about +3. It seemed to produce a very natural result.

Thank you!

There's usually a couple ways to get the same result.

There is no right or wrong way to do anything in Photoshop as long as you like the results. The massive amount of tools, filters and adjustments means there are usually MORE than a couple of ways of doing the same thing. That what's so cool about it and what makes it so difficult to learn.

Everyone is so right about the different ways to go about it and the difficulty to learn. I spent about an hour with it open and my "Teach yourself" Photoshop book with Gergorie's kind instructions. But I was very frustrated because I am still learning the basics. But when I stumbled upon the other method and it worked, I was thrilled! Actually I think I lightened it a lot more than +3.

Thank you so much for this forum. It is a huge help to me!
