Flash softbox accessories

Can anyone tell me about the diffusers and softbox attachements that you can attach to your flash equipment to soften the harsh shawdows behind? Are they worth purchasing? I shoot a lot of weddings and they seem like the would help soften some of my portraits- any thoughts on them would be great- by the way I'm not I'm not talking about my studio lighting, I mean the flash on my camera. Canon Speedlight-
thanks

  Mandy,
I use a Lumiquest MiniSoftbox and I think it makes a world of difference, especially when shooting at fairly close range. It goes on with Velcro, and folds small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. It diffuses the flash without reducing its power as much as bouncing does.

Check out garyfong.com he has the new light sphere. I just ordered mine. There is a video you can watch. It's really getting great reviews.

Mandy, I'll second Mike's opinion - I've used the Lumiquest as well as the Stofen flash diffusers and the Lightsphere from Gary Fong far surpasses both of them in terms of softening and spreading the light output f the flash.

I haven't looked at Gary Fong's site in a while, so I don't know if he gives this info there. I was wondering if anyone knows how much the Lightsphere decreases the power of your flash. Most light modifiers will say that they cut your flash's output by 1 stop, 2 stops, etc.

I know that when using ETTL, that you don't have to actually adjust for this, because the flash will automatically compensate. But it will affect the maximum effective distance of your flash. Just trying to get a feel for it.

Chris, I don't think Gary has a particular specification for this, but my sense is that I lose about 2 stops worth of light (when I have the inverted dome in place). Of course, if you don't use the dome and are outdoors or inside with a cathedral cieling so the light has nothing to bounce off, far more than 3/4 of the light output is going to be lost.

I have a softbox bought during one photo class but prefer using a clear plastic alcohol bottle, cut in two, slipped over my Nikon SB-28 (learned in another photo class.) A plastic soap dish works well for bigger flashes.

If it doesn't fit, put in warm over, then it can be stretched.

Not very attractive or professional looking but it works well and that is what that photography teacher uses!

Has anyone ever heard or used the strobe sock @ adorama camera? I saw a photographer with one after seeing it in the popular photography magazine

I have a dedicated softbox for my 580 ex flash and I just got the light sphere. I love both. The lightsphere does cause you to lose 2 stops and the soft box makes you lose 1 stop. I found that I use the soft box more because of the size of it and I love the skin tones I get from it. I guess I need to mess around with the light sphere some more but so far i'm liking my soft box. but I most certainly strongly recommend getting something to diffuse the flash it has meant the world to my shots. see ya!
