New Website Look!

Not a question---just happy with the new website look here---finally, I no longer have the "gap" issue, when in my Member Center, trying to pull up the left-side links---the flyout menu never aligned correctly (only on the Member Center!) This resolves that issue...
Nice, smooth look to the redesign.

I like the look too and had the same problem as Christopher, however I find the fact that I now have a large blue border down the right hand side of my screen as everything appears smaller to be very irritating .. Does anyone know I can solve this? Audrey

I also dislike the wide blue border. I would like to see the page fill the screen. The thumbnails seem smaller. They should take a look at PBase format, easy viewing and the smallest file looks sharp and a good size.
All the blue is wasted space.

Does anyone think the site is faster since the change, it seems to be this evening, but maybe that is just coincidence !

I'm not sure what to think of it. If it proves to be faster, great, but everything seems smaller, and the blue band on the right seems like a waste of space. I'm never one for changes, kind of liked it the way it was before.

Nope, I'm not a fan of it either, the color is bland and I actually thought the system was messed up at first. I actually liked the old one!!

That blue border is way too wide and the writing looks like it is almost on top of the next line. Other than that, it's not so bad. I'm also resistant to change in case nobody has noticed. LOL

Not crazy about the blue border either !!! But seems to be a bit faster though... Like to see the image on the left of comments in "New Discussions"... It will take a little bit of getting use to...

Faster maybe because no graphics. Which might end up going into the alley to the right.

Change is good. I don't like the blue border as I feel like I have to keep trying to maximizing the screen...and of course that's not the issue. Everything else...so far...looks great.

Not wild about the new look; but, then I am also slow to accept change. The only real complaint is that the page seems oddly uncentered. I keep moving my computer chair and monitor thinking that I am off center. But, it seems to be the page itself that runs off on the left and the blue border on the right seems weird. Otherwise, hey, we all have to adapt to change. I'm just glad its not me having to make changes that will keep everyone happy!

I'm not against change..but I just had trouble trying to get to the Upload Page to include a photo with a response to one of my older photos.

Is this a glitch?

Improvements and enhancements are always good:

But a couple of things:
- The main column does look off-centered or skewed.
- The main font color is a little too light. A darker font color will certainly helps those who may have some eye problems(not that I am blind ;) ).

One observation: On the top menu bar, "CONTEST" is the last in the list...,hmmmm...
It would be the most frequently used button IMO...

I think the wide blue border is to accomodate screens that are set to a lower resolution. To test it, I set my screen to 1024x768 and the blue border became a very narrow strip.

Of course I won't leave it that way. ;-)

Let's give it a chance and see how it works.

Chris

I like it, the site is much quicker,
a coloured scroll bar with matching background to match and I like the new menu bar.

It depends on how your screen is set up, mine is set up to 1024 x768 so I guess I don't see how others see it. It would be a mammoth task running this website so full marks! ~Pat

The only complaint I have is that the blue strip on the right, should be much smaller. It is distracting and makes you feel like you want to move your screen over.

The site certainly seems to be running faster! Generally I think the changes are terrific - congrats to BP for all the work they must have put in to the redesign. But I too have problems with the blue strip on the right. I don't know whether I have mucked up my monitor settings, but I had to change the text size down to smaller so that the lines of text are separated enough to read them. Now I am having trouble reading the small text.... Some text on the page remains the larger "squashed together" size - for example, the "previous response" listings on the left when you are responding to a thread like this.

I changed the monitor resolution, but this did not change the width of the strip on the right.

I am at a bit of a disadvantage because of vision problems - having surgery on one eye in a couple of weeks :o( . Any tips on "optimum" monitor settings?

Hi guys, I am all for a faster running site, if the blue page was made back to white again it would not be so noticable.

Have you change the text size by looking up at the top of your screen, go to VIEW then down to text size.

What browser do you use Robyn? tia ~Pat

Hi Pat - I'm using Internet Explorer v.6. I've tried altering the text size via the "View" menu, with the effects described earlier - can't have a reasonable size font without the lines running too close together.

Hi Robyn, Yep, that happens to me, now I understand what you mean. It is the design then, I am sure BP could easily change it back as they would use a style sheet.

I think the blue gap is caused by where the email password box has been put. ~Pat

The blue gap on the right of my screen is at least two inches wide - closer to three. This doesn't change significantly if I change the screen resolution. I have an LG Flatron 787LE. Is this "normal"? I have the same problem with some other websites not "filling" the screen, while for example my gallery pages on BP are still in the old style and fill the screen. I don't know enough about computers to know whether this is related to monitor, graphics/video card/drivers, browser, or something else??? My computer is two years old, and has a Indeo Video Interactive P.4-3 by Intel, and GeCube Radeon 9200 SE 128mb Game Buster. This all means nothing to me, really...:o)

PS: I was just in the "Your Photos" page in my gallery - the header appears with a 3 inch right margin, but the photos section is wider - fills all except about 3/4 inch of the screen.

LOL Gregory, that's funny, I got a laugh out of that!!

Hey Robyn, that is terrible, my gap is only 3/4 of an inch. An LG Flatron 787LE. is your screen, they are supposed to have a bigger work space, maybe this causes it.

My gallery is still in the old style, I would think that BP did not put the blue background there as it would clash.

If it is really bothering you it would be best to send Heather a mail. I feel the font is too small to read for folk with sight disabilities .

It would be simple to change and I am sure they would appreciate being told. I don't think I could put up with a three inch stripe down the side either.
~Pat

It appears to me that the "white page area" of the new design (ie, the portion that is not blue/grey) is 925 pixels wide. (There is a tiny bit of blue background down the left edge as well; about 3 pixels wide.) I've set my screen resolution at 1028x768. So the white page area is about 100 pixels short of filling the 1028 pixel-width setting. Which results in my "blue bar" on the right being about 3/4" wide, before the vertical scroll bar. If you can set to a much higher resolution, your blue bar would likely be the width of your resolution setting minus about 928. On the large screens, assuming 72 ppi on your display, two or three hundred leftover pixels will equal a few inches.

The font size I can see if you have eyesight problems. But the blue border and everthing else is just a matter of whether or not it looks good. Yall can live with it can't you? Unless it's something like a change to your gallery, but it's nothing to voice an opinion about how the this page looks, but you can't expect it to be designed to order.

  G’Day Greg,

It’s Monday morning where I am, and I’m at work. The BP site looks great on my work monitor! That is, the blue strip on the right is narrow – only about ½”. Also, if I change the text size via the “view” menu, it doesn’t muck up the line spacing. So, it looks the way it is supposed to. I LIKE the new design!

My problems are with my home monitor, a relatively cheap 2 year old LG Flatron 787LE. As explained earlier, the blue strip appears almost 3” wide, no matter what the resolution of the monitor, and the font size is a little too small for me to read comfortably. Increasing the font size does not increase the line spacing, so the lines become too compressed.

I didn’t have this problem with the old BP design, which always filled the screen. But I do have the same wide blank areas when viewing some other websites. It’s just that I spend quite a bit of time on BP, so I thought it would be worthwhile mentioning the problem, to see if there's an easy solution.

So, I’m not requesting a “designed to order” website. Simply, asking whether there’s something at my end I can change to remedy the viewing problems I’m having. Alternatively, would it be a relatively simple thing to change the relevant stylesheet/s at the BP end? If not, that’s OK – I’ll put up with it until I can afford new hardware - I can’t afford to replace my monitor at the moment, as I have eye surgery to pay for…. :o)

I’ll check with Heather.

Robyn

I love the new web site! Well designed web sites are hard to come by and I think BP had done a great job with this one! It's always difficult to get used to web sites when they're changed, but I think this one is much easier to navigate and looks well designed. And yes, it does seem much faster which is wonderful because it could get really slow sometimes!!!

And if there isn't anything anybody can do on their end, and it has to stay like this, color and everthing, will people be able to live with that? Or will it become another mole mountain that is prone to happen around here?

I have been away. AsI was reading this thread I imagened being brand new and I got the idea you all didn't have a helva lot to do.
Perhaps the designers put that blue line ther just to see what would happen.
Keep an eye on it....in a month or so they will move it to the left just to see if anyone notices.

Has anyone noticed the little "File/Print/E-mail This Image" window that pops up on a Gallery image when hovering over it?
I just tried one as a test and saved an image off this site with no problem. (I deleted it afterward.)

We're all honest folks here but why make it so easy?
(...kind'a negates the dis-abled right click feature, doesn't it?)

It can be designed to order quite simply, change
the style sheet, I get my site checked out in fifteen browers.

You are correct Greg, the monitor
problems cannot be helped but visual distractions can. I will look at a suggestion and change the background if it worries folk thus members should write to Heather.

The web master here is brilliant and I am sure would not hesitate in changing
the background back to white again if it irritates folk.
There are guidelines for the web, one of them is to make it readable for
all,> This
is what we try to do but the designer needs to know about the problem first. ~Pat

  Then try teal.
But that's what I'm talking about. Somebody thought it's a nice color. And just because I don't think it is, or just because several people say so on the q&a, dosen't mean there's enough that think the same, and dosen't mean who chose the color will change it. Or even need to.
The galleries and deluxe sites are different, at least to me. I can see being more possevive over the gallery colors. But if the product is good, and the employees treat you well when you go into a store, they don't have to change the store front because a few people don't like the color it's painted.
Before anyone says you won't want to go into the store, it's an analogy. Why would you not come to a web site, or keep using it, just because of a page color? Dosen't keep it from giving you what you want.

There is a lot one needs to do to when complying with internet legislation and guidelines. The Disabilty Discrimination Act in Web Design is a legal requirement in the UK and Oz, I don't know about your country which is why we may be at cross purposes. I am speaking of web design in general, folk would only visit this site once and not come back. The colour is too distracting and the font is too small. The link is HERE

Speaking for some of the old geezer contingent, my 62-year-old eyes would appreciate black instead of grey for the font, which itself is a little small.

And I'd appreciate even more if the Mad Underliner were sent to another planet. All those lines are visually distracting, and the clutter adds nothing to the legibility.

The new design does load faster. The blue strip on my 19" monitor is 4" wide, but I can live with it; it just takes some getting used to.

Then both of you might have to stay offended if you can't explain how a dull shade of blue, a common shade at that, is something that falls into a discriminatory category. Especially when one of chose to type in a font the same exact color.
Like I said before, here comes a mole mountain.

Why don't you read. You kept staying on the blue color, bringing in a disability act. You don't need the web to know a goof ball.
