Help with how to make my own backdrop

I have 2 large pieces of muslin and my dye. How do I get that mottled type look on the muslin? Any suggestions are very appreciated!

  Hi Jennifer,

I have used the low water immersion dyeing process to get that effect. It is really quite easy. After treating the fabric crumple it up and stuff into a bucket. Then I poured the mixed dye over it and stirred it with the fabric. I then let it sit for several minutes and added more dye. You can add more dye same color, different intensity, another color or water. You can also let dry and add more dye later. I have also laid out damp treated pieces of fabric and applied color with a sponge brush
and have even sprinkled on dye powder-this gives a different look. What you get depends on the fabric, treatment dye,air temp. and moisture content of fabric when starting. You might want to try a small sample to see what method and effect works best for your needs. I have had really good luck with Procion MX dyes. Hope this helps. If you need any more info let me know.

Take care,
