Shooting Outside

I was wondering, If I'm going to be shooting pictures outside in front of a background should I use extra lighting besides my external flash?

Also, if it gets dark and I'm still takes pictures of people in front of this back ground should I use my stobes? and if so should I use a flash meter to get an accurate reading?

Doing a favor for a friend.

Jyan, you're not telling us enough informaiton.

Are you going to take pictures in daytime, and plan on using the flash for fill lighting?

How far away from the subject(s) will you be - 6 feet? 30 feet? For that matter, how many people will be in a shot (more would imply a wider swath of space to properly illuminate).

What kind of external flash do you have - does it communicate with your camera for TTL (through the lens) control? Newer models of flim and all the DSLRs have that capability with the proper flash units.

"outside in front of a background" doesn't tell enough about the situation.
