Recent Price Drops I recently noticed rebates and price reductions on Canon and Nikon entry level Digital SLR's (D50, D70 And Digital Rebel XT Kits). I am anxious to upgrade, but experience tells me there are better, slightly more expensive cameras in the wings. Anyone with an ear to the pipeline know what is coming and if it is worth the wait?

Tim, nobody on this site will have anything more than unsubstantiatable rumors, just like on dpreview and other sites. Everyone claims they have inside info, but the fact is that until something is officially announced it's impossible to tell. As for the "buy now or wait" thing - which, again, is a common ailment, the only commonsense approach is really to think in terms of "what kind of shooting will I be missing today if I wait another 6 months for the D99 or 300DD or whatever that "they" say is coming?" No different than personal computers, really (for many of the same reasons) - this technology is fast improving, and if you don't draw your line in the sand then you'll never buy anything because the next best thing, coming in 6 months, is 10 times better than what's out today. I just read about R&D being done on imaging ship technology with 100-1000 times as much dynamic range as today's CCDs. But waiting for that to hit the market, which it no doubt will in a few years, is just silly. Likewise the alleged "full frame" digital Nikons. If you can make use of the current gear today, then just get it. There will always, always be something better in the wings.

Thanks for the advice - it about sums up what I suspected - I just did not want to make a foolish mistake, and figured with the expertise levels of the BP audience, there would be good helpful opinions. Thanks again.

Tim: The Digital Rebel XT for example, is SO good, and so reasonably priced, I see no need to wait for something even better. My primary camera is the 16 megapixel EOS 1Ds Mk II, but I also use the Rebel XT when hiking, touring cities, etc. It's very versatile, fast and produces excellent image quality but is compact/lightweight a major benefit. There's an excellent evaluation of this camera at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/page28.php Peter

I personally wouldn't wait. I tried that with the D200. I would have been stuck shooting with the Nikon 5700 for well over a year after rumors began circling when I just decided to get the D70. I sure don't regret the decision to go ahead and buy. I don't think you will either and whatever you purchase will still be going strong by the time something new comes out and is on the market long enough to be less expensive once again :o)!
