Photography Question

Question about courtesy photos

I was wondering if anybody has submitted courtesy photos to a local paper? If so, how do you go about submiting them and what rights does the photographer continue to keep on the photograph? There is a local paper that I want to try submiting courtesy photos to, but I am just not sure how to go about it. Thanks in advance.

  Hi Angela,

I submitted about eight courtesy photo's to our local Newspaper. Also have submitted some to the Wyoming State TV news channel.

I called the Newspaper and they gave me an email address to mail them to.

Three of the images have ran in the newspaper and two of those images were in full color on the front page and one was in black and white on the front page.

As for the TV station I picked up two pictures of the Day (on different days)and they run on several newscasts during the day.

The TV station advertises that they want images and where to email them to.

You can also call your local newspaper and your local TV stations and ask if they have a program where they take people's images to show on the TV or run in the local newspaper.

The TV station does not take any people images they like weather related images and some landscapes and they have to be from Wyoming in this case.

In my case I retain all rights to my images I am just giving them a one time use of the image.

  hey angela,
kerby is right, you retain the rights if you have a release.i still love to give photos and stories to my local paper.
the local editor is my neighbor.campfire a few beers.i know not the goals of all.
my goal.a mystery in the making.kinda crap.we just have fun with our community.great big 4,000 circ..little frog, little pond.geeez I can smell the pond from here.but quite a blast.
angela, if your local editor won't give you some time, use the letters to the editor thing.sign it,please.if you want to get into this you need to be you.ya know,i am saying this and this is me and my opinion.if you can't say something and when someone asks, did you say that, don't hesitate, yeah I said that.your good to go.but yes you retain the rights to your photo.

  Angela,

Just two weeks ago, I was on my way home from work and saw a fire burning a tree nursery. I always have my camera so I snapped a few shots. I got home, called the paper and was told to e-mail them in to the editor. The editor e-mailed me back promptly and commented on the photo's. The next day, there it was right on the front page. It was a pretty cool thing to see one of my pictures on the front page of the paper, so call the editor and they should give you an e-mail address to send them in to. ( Be sure to ask about file sizes, mine came back and I had to re-send them ) And yes the photo is still yours.
Fred
