Photography Question

D200 or 30D

I am a serious hobbyist and I shoot film for over a decade though I stopped for another 6-8 years until 2004 when I picked up my 1st DSLR the Nikon D70 which I'm still using and happy with it. I still shoot film with my FM2n, FM3a and F1oo and own a couple of good prime MF lenses. I have participated in workshops mostly portraiture and product shoots and I'm particularly fond of street photography which I do a lot using both film and digital. I am now seriously considerin upgrading my D70 possibly with the D200. I am quite worried with some issues of early production models and the higher ISO noise the D200 produce vs the canon 30D. The major set back if I do this is to build up lenses when I switch brand. I can sell though some of my AF lenses like the 24-120VR, Tokina 12-24, 85 1.4 and possibly the 28-105 also. Will this be a good choice or I just pass off the D200 and wait for a new model or upgraded D200?

I work at a ritz camera store and what I can tell you is that in our store and the surrounding stores we sell the D200 3 to 1 compared to the 30D. I have only had 1 D200 returned because of defects but the customer did get another one. on a personal note the D200 feels like a very sturdy professional camera and to me the canon feels like a big piece of plastic but I am biased. hope this helps

I hadn't heard anything about noise issues with the D200. Guess I better visit Google.

I have been tempted to get a Canon 20D and a good zoom lens for landscapes just for comparision but ultimitely decided that would be nuts when I'm happy with the D70. I can't imagine anything Canon has is so much better than Nikon that you would be limited in any way. If this were true professional photographers wouldn't touch Nikon.

I guess I don't get it. Why do you want to upgrade from a D70? What can either the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D do that the Nikon D70 can't? I guess I'm hoping you're not one of those, like so many in my camera club, who have to have the latest camera.

With a Canon, all your lenses change. Since the lenses you use with the Nikon D70 are usable with the D200, the Nikon makes the most sense based on lens costs.

However, if you're really going to upgrade, perhaps you should consider going to the Canon 5D and get rid of the 1.6 lens issue with the larger sensor it has.

I've been using Canon EOS film SLRs since 1988; just received my 30D last week. Now, if I can just understand a worthless manual [from the standpoint of easy use.] It's just like almost every software program's manual - but, there's "Canon 30D for Dummies."

IThanks all for your response....1st off the D200 exhibited more noise from ISO 800 up as shown in several samples in the discussions@nikonians forum. There were manay many discussions on this in that forum.

2nd I have tried the D200 in a photo show last Feb here in Philippines and it really is a gem to hold, feels very sturdy just like when I first hold an F100. Semi-pro level with a pro touch. I really like Nion ergonomics no doubt.

3rd, Ive been using my D70 for 2 years and now that I'm getting some wedding, portraiture, product shoots, I think I may need to upgrade to have larger file sizes for customer needs and if I can't sell my D70 at a fair price I might as well keep it as a back-up body. I do have a good day job so this is just part time when I'm available and BTW events are mostly on weekends and product soots can be done night time in a studio.

4th, I am comtmplating on 30D as I might have great use of 30D at higher ISO during events that I want to create a mood or flash is not allowed. I did a body painting shoot last month using only the LCD projector as the light source directed at the nude model's body. I used my D70 with the 85 1.4 wide open and 2.0 at ISO 800 and it's reaaly great except for some noticeable noise. My friend who uses the 20D with his 85 1.8 does nopt have any noticeable noise. Ill try to atach some samples.

Well I think I have to go D20 and in extreme shoots I'll just use the noise ninja. The lenese are way too expensive for me to upgrade.

Hi guys! I am new in photography. Any one can give me a feedback regarding EOS30D. 2 days ago I bought my 30D at a canon store. The problem is, it seems that at daylight, with ISO100, my shots are dark, I mean darker compare to the same setting taken by my old EOS300D. I don't know if something is wrong with the exposure or the settings. Any help? Thanks ~christine~

  I again agree with Jon,
I do own the D70 and D200, now if you want to add another camera to your bag that would accept your lens and upgrade your equiptment, then I would suggest the Fuji S5.
I shoot Portraits as a Professional for my living and I do use my D200 and D70, but I love the color of the Fuji Cameras for this so most of the time I use my Fuji S2( as seen in Gallery)
If I had not been having Problems with the D70( as seen on Nikon.usa recall problem, was fixed quickly and back like new) before a wedding I was due to shoot I would not have bought the D200,which I LOVE.
I would be upgradeing to the Fuji S5,
the Fuji Color in a D200 body.
This is something to really consider for the Portrait Artist.
Completely Nikon Compatible.
I hope this helps,
Debby Tabb
