Photography Question

Senior photo outdoors in an ugly time of year

I have taken 3 series of Senior Portraits with raving reports from the parents, but I am not a professional photographer.

My camera is a Nikon Coolpix 8700.

I promised to take my nephew's Senior Photos... but I live far away and we will be moving overseas soon. I will be visiting the area in North Dakota the first week in May.

I usually take outdoor photos as the lighting issue is easier. I prefer an overcast day or "magic hour" when the sun is setting.

My sister-in-law lamented that the first week in May doesn't even have green grass yet, nor have the trees budded.

I'd like some portrait suggestions.

My nephew is hugely into theatre and voice. He wants some theatre-type shots.

I've thought of taking something after school with window lighting??

Also their garage looks like an old barn with chipped paint.

Other thoughts?

Are they near water (lake, ocean, stream)? Usually anything near water is green; if not the water is a nice backdrop (sand or trees near the water too).

:-) You'll do great I am sure.

There's a river. This is near Fargo where they had all the flooding recently, so there's a lot of sand and mud on the banks.

I'm thinking the background of a building - like stone or something... might be good.

Hi there. I did senior pics of a guy during the "bad season". I would suggest and brick buildings, barns, rundown buildings, cool stairs, rocks, bridges, and even railroad tracks. if you want to see a few of mine with those elements go to www.kristieckbergphotography.com and under the 2nd page of senior pics there are samples of these. good luck!

Just to mention how a headline can be misinterpreted....I thought you were talking about us "gray folk" trying to walk on the ice and snow. LOL
