Photography Question

Melissa D. Sones

Help for aspiring photographers?

I guess this would be my first question: Would anyone recommend a certain Digital camera for a beginner in the photography business? I'm starting from the very bottom. Any advice? HELP! I'd appreciate ANY words of wisdom or pointers. Thank you so much!
Melissa

Melissa, I guess the first question to you is what do you mean by you're being a "beginner" - does that mean that you are familiar with the craft of photography and are just starting out trying to be a pro, or that you have desires to get into photography professionally but need to learn the basics?

It isn't the camera, it's the photographer. There is NO "right" camera for business or play. A camera should have the controls and features you'll use and, maybe, one or two you'd like.

If you don't know what these are and what they do, it may be premature for you to thinking about getting into the business. In such is the case, get a used film camera, take pictures and learn about depth of field, shutter versus aperture priority, light fall off from a flash, composition, etc. As you learn, you'll determine the kinds of features that will be important to you in your next camera.

Although digital is here to stay, most digitals are too automated to allow the learning experience. The Nikon D70 was, reportedly, discontinued because it was just too difficult to use. But, simply owning a costly digital SLR, for example, is no guarantee that a photographer is going to take the kinds of pictures someone else will want to buy.

As I write this I'm sitting awaiting the arrival of my first [and last] digital, the Canon 30D. I bought it for several reasons:

While I wanted one of the Canon Mark IIs, no one who isn't earning big bucks shooting pictures can justify anywhere up to $8,000 for a camera body. In fact the $2,500-3,000 price for the 5D is still too high, but it would be nice to get rid of the lens factor. The Rebel XT is an entry level camera that, based on the current rebate, will be discontinued soon. It makes little sense to buy this camera now.

There's a new chip on its way in Canon SLRs if PopPhoto is correct. But, wioth a new chip will come higher prices.

My choice was between the D20 and D30. While the larger LCD viewer might be the "decider" for some, it was the spot meter [which I have on both my EOS 6290 and EOS 3] that did it for me.

Wow. Thank you for responding so quickly! Yes, i'm familiar with the "craft" of photography. I'm just struggling with how to start up a successful business..and stuck at stage one!

Think back to the very beginning....where you know you've got the eye....have taken a few good photographs for people...maybe even have worked at photography studios in the past. You know the basics.......have the heart and WILL power and DREAM to make it a business...but it's so overwhelming! Where do you start?!! Does that make sense? What was your "First step" into all of this? Camera first? THEN jobs?

I've got an old faithful Olympus c-700 with just 2.1 mp. Surprisingly, it's done it's job until now. I seriously need to upgrade if I want to make it. Right? The choices out there are overwhelming though. "brand/price/mega pix's verses memory....etc etc etc!

I'm interested most in doing outdoor portraits..and occasionally studio pic's. What SLR in your opinion...is best for both? Thanks for your time.

  Thank you Debbie and John.

my photographer friend has a Nikon D70..and another a Canon EOS 30D. Their constantly fighting over which one is best and not! I know there's no right camera for business or play..but WELCOME your input and advice!

So? The Nikon D70 will be discontinued?
hmmmmm.

My other problem would be that i'm planning on starting up my own business in a tiny town. Just over 2,000 to be exact. The only competition is 15 to 20 minutes away. I don't know if that's to my advantage.....or?

Is it even feasible for a small town?

Yep. I'm clueless.

Personally I have not hear that the D70 was discontinued- just upgraded to the D70s.
I have suggested this camera to those on the "Studio Photography Thread" and those who have bought it seem to love it.
You should check there and get some opions. here is the link:
http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/QnAdetail.php?threadID=23238

I have found it very easy to use and get to know, I have the 20D and Fuji S2. And just personally prefer the D70.
But I usually suggest you go out to the local store( NOT TO BUY) just test and feel.
I use the D70 in most of my Portrait work and my outside work as well.
But again, this is just one girls opinion.
Do go to the studio thread and ask there as well from those who are just starting out as well.

here is the link to Nikon and the D70 and D70s are both listed:
http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/digitalcamera/index.htm

FYI: if you get or have a D70 all the upgrades to the "S" are avaliable to download through the Nikon web site.
For help with this you can just call customer service.

Thank you Debby! I really appreciate your input. My friend swears by the d70 as well. I'm definitely going to go to a local store and get a feel for one before I buy.
Studio thread huh..
I'm on my way! Thanks again.
And to you too John!
