Shooting in harsh light

I have a photoshoot coming up for a 1 year old at a local zoo. The mother has scheduled the session for 2pm, because that is the best time of day for her son to be in a "good mood". I am concerned about the harshness of the light at that time of day. Should I try to stick to areas of the zoo that offer shade?

Certainly, shaded areas will offer you the best type of soft lighting. If the mom insists that you take shots in front of the chimp display or something, though, and you can't get a shadey spot (or have someone hold a large sheet of foamcore or something as a scrim to create some shade) then you should use a flash unit to fill the shadows.
