What is the best film speed, shutter speed, technique, etc to shoot evening sporting events?

Not to sound silly, M, but you should use the fastest film you can get so as to achieve the fastest shutter speed possible (and having a fast lens wouldn't hurt, either).

Of course, this assumes you are speaking of sporting events that are in poorly lit venues and large enough arenas where portable flash units won't help (or aren't allowed).

As for technique, other than the general "pan with the motion" concept, I think you need to be a touch more specific as to what kind of sport you plan to shoot.
