Photography Question

Simon

Canon v Nikon

Hi

Can someone give me some advice as I am torn between buying the CANON EOS 35OD or the Nikon D50. I have had a compact camera for a year and have loved it however I am looking to upgrade. I am looking for something that will last a long time. The photos I hope to take are landscape, sporting events (tour de France, and 2 photos I would love to take are moving water and the nights stars as they move round (would the shutter speed be long enough for these shots? Can anyone help?

Thanks Simon

I know nothing about the Nikon, but so as not to influence you with my own biased opinion, if you click on the 'Most Popular Cameras' tab under 'Reviews' on the left menu bar of your screen, it's not hard to tell which of the two manufacturers is the most preferred camera by the users on this site. I'll let the data speak for itself.
Beyond that, try taking the digital camera calulator under the same tab. At the end you will find a whole list of cameras and if you click on the ones you are interested in, you can read a little about the camera itself, and a lot about what actual users have to say about that model.

Hope this helps.
Bob

Simon, it would be best if you actually handle both of these models yourself. Either of these cameras is fine, as are the other DSLRs in the price range, and their differences are really related to ergonomics.

That is, when you atually pick up a camera and hold it in your hands and look through the eyepiece, you may well find it difficult to read the viewfinder information or think that viewfinder is too dark or even feel the camera is "out of balance" in your hands or that the controls don't fall naturally under your fingers. All of these things are subtle, and no specification sheet, marketing propoganda, or other (well intentioned) person's opinion can help you make the decision.

Canon's got the biggest market share, and to use an analogy (without starting a flame war here), so does Windows. There are those who feel Windows is not the bestest most deluxe operating system in the world, but thanks to marketing, it is what it is.

So, again, the only point is to check out the cameras for yourself. Either has more than enough accessories and lenses to put you in the poorhouse, and both are capable of taking excellent photographs in the right hands. Only you can ascertain the comfort level you have with a particular model. And this is important since, if you find a camera clunky and hard to use, you won't tend to use it as much...which kind of defeats the purpose.

As I had stated originally, don't let my own biased opinion sway you and I do agree with Bob that you should try before you buy. Years ago I owned just about every 'A' series camera Canon made before finally stepping up to the pro model the F1N. I did not like the feel of that camera at all. And to add to what Bob said, if is doesn't feel right, then you are not going to get good pictures with it. Everyone is made different so the same camera isn't going to fit in everyones hand and feel the same way as far as balance, comfort, ease of use. My problem with the F1N was the shutter button was further forward on the camera body then on the 'A' series, and after shooting with them for so long, it was just uncomfortable.
But just to set the record straight, Microsoft has a monopoly on operating systems, only because no one else has ever had anything to really compete with it.
However, Canon is far from having a monopoly as there are plenty of other manufacturers out there makeing cameras just as good and the take just as good a picture.
However, I think Canon has raised the bar by offereing the consumer (photographer) more of what they want in a camera, especially with the 20D. And you don't have to take out a mortgage to buy it like the 1Ds. Plus with all the features for creativity in both color and B&W. Now that they have a real winner, they're running with it in the 5D & 30D. But I think they are still too pricey on the higher megapixel cameras. But like everything else new in this world, it will eventually come down in price.

Hi Simon, I had a 350D and sold it to buy the D50. To me the D50 seems to have nicer colour and is better to handle but of course everyone's opinion will be different otherwise we would all be walking around with the same camera. Probably the most frustrating thing about the D50 is that there is no backlight in the top LCD screen which makes it useless in low light. Also I got the 18-70 lens which comes in the D70 kit instead of the D50 kit lense. After doing the maths it probably would have been better just going straight for the D70. The best thing you can do is play with both and talk to some of the people on this site.

"However, I think Canon has raised the bar by offereing the consumer (photographer) more of what they want in a camera, especially with the 20D."

IMHO the 20D is no better than Nikon's D200. IF Canon has raised the bar some, to me it would be in the number of lenses they offer. It seems to me Canon has a much wider array of lenses than Nikon does. I do not feel they are any better quality though. Just more choices. BTW, I have the Nikon D70 and love it.

Well, didn't mean to step on anyones toes here.
I'm glad you love your Nikon D70. As I had also said, in agreement with Bob, that it is best to go to a store where one can actually handle, see and operate the equipment before making any decisions.
BTW, I have the Canon 20D and love it.

It is a bit like asking: "Which is better, Ford or Chevy?".

In my opinion, both Canon and Nikon make excellent equipment, and you really can't go wrong with either of the two cameras you listed. The best advice was already given by the other posters: Try them both out, and go with the one that you like the best.

I like to think of it as a "personality" issue. Both Canon and Nikon make good stuff, with countless dedicated users touting each brand. Your job is to decide which specific camera works "best" for you. Like Bob's ergonomics point... I also think Dan's Ford/Chevy analogy is a good one, or Coke/Pepsi.

Unless you have a strong emotional connection with one of the brands (which is ok, by the way), you should look at both, and see which one feels more "right" to you.

I'm a D70 user myself, and love it.

canon and Nikon.. both well made cameras. The big two so to speak... hey, I have seen enough great shots here to know that any one of the cameras sold today are great, it all depends on you. I like my 350D Canon and wouldnt switch to Nikon any time soon because all my lenses would then have to go and I love them.... I would cry!
(lol) I was looking into the d70 but sinc I already had a canon, I was a member of a canon forum, I just went with the canon.. go try them both and see wich one you like the feel of.
good luck, glad im not making this choice!

I was torn between the Nikon D70 & Canon Rebel. I did just what you guys were talking about. I held both in my hands & found the D70 felt really natural in my hands & the menu was very easy to understand. So I have the D70 & love it!!
