Photography Question

Lens cases - any recommendations? Lowepro?

Purchased a 20D a few weeks ago, and like the rest of you, I'm sinking even more money into lenses. Took delivery on a $1200 lens yesterday and I figure it's worth at least a few bucks to get a good case to protect it.

Can't find many lens case reviews on this site.

I want a good, well-padded case for some short, medium, and telephoto size lenses.

How about Lowepro? The pictures of the Street & Field line look to be nicely padded, and the price is good.

Any links to sites with good reviews would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Dan

I don't know of any reviews per se (though you could check places like epinions.com, or even Amazon.com to see if buyers have reviewed lens cases), but I can tell you the Lowepro cases are qutie good. I have their S&F belt/harness/lens and accy case system, and it's well designed and manufactured.

You could also check out a company called Think Tank Photo - this was apparently started by a bunch of ex-LowePro designers or something and their product is as good or better, near as I can tell. I have their "Airport Addicted" suitcase-sized bag, and can vouch for its quality. Think Tank also makes a belt-based modular system.

There are a couple of other companies that also offer these types of set-ups, though their names excape me for now. But I don't think LowePro or Think Tank will disappoint.

Tamrac is another option. I use Tamrac camera bags that take accessories from their SAS (Strap Accessory System) and MAS (Modular Accessory System) lines. The MAS lens cases and accessory pouches can strap onto the outside of the camera bag for easy access. They also have a belt system that all of the cases and pouches can fit on.

Howdy Dan. It'd probably be worthwhile for you to take a look at Richard Stumm's equipment case and accessory site. He's a pro and also makes excellent cases, bags and so forth for other pros. http://www.kinesisgear.com.

Take it light

Thank for the replies, gang. I'm looking at the various brands.

I want a thick padding, so I wrote an email to thinktankphoto asking about their padding compared to others. I got an email back from a Doug Murdoch. He stated their padding was 3mm where lowepro's and tamrac's were 10mm. He said that if I wanted thick padding, he would recommend their product.

I thought that was a real class act. Instead of trying to sell me something I really didn't want, he recommended a competitor. So when I'm looking for more portable, thinner padding cases, that's where I'm going and would recommend them to anybody else.

Regards,
-Dan
