Wedding Pix - constructive crits pls

Hi all, I've had my nose in my computer, EDITING!! This is a seriously time consuming job, and just as soon as I've a moment to actually read the manual, I'm going to organise my work flow! In the meantime, please would you have a look at some recent additions from a wedding and 21st I did recently. Any constructive crits would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Robyn. I'm certainly no professional, but I am getting married later this year, so I'll go ahead and chip in my 2 cents. If you hadn't asked for critiques I'd just say wow - all the shots are lovely, but you asked, so... I love the photo of the bride & groom on the pier (Tammy & Chris 6). I also like the color photo of the bride at the window holding the flowers - I think the one without the flowers seems to be missing something - like flowers :) and the B&W shot by the window seems a bit washed out - could have been the harsh lighting conditions. Tammy 2 is beautiful and I love the downward angle. The B&W shot of the bride looking out from behind the door is a great, fun shot and so is the one with the zoom effect. I'm not a big fan of the photos with the vignetting effect but that's just my personal preference. It's a good effect for some photos, I just prefer to see the whole scene, like "Tammy & Chris 10" which I'd love to see without the effect just to compare. In general however, you have a great eye and I love looking at your photos. The previous wedding pics in your gallery are beautiful as well. It's great to see such wonderful shots taken with "my" new camera - gives me hope for myself someday.

Thanks so much Karen - your comments are valid and appreciated. Yes the lighting was very difficult, and she was joking around a lot, pulling faces and hamming it up, so I was quite surprised I got anything to work with!! I also am battling with colour/brightness balancing in some cases as my screen is not balanced. But thanks for taking the time. Its a lovely camera, and I'm off to check your gallery now :) Good luck with your wedding

Robyn, glad you are back safe!!! I love these pics as well. Having seen the color version of Tammy & Chris 4, I really like the conversion to b&w, it really made that particular photo come alive. How do you convert to b&w by the way? I have PSE2 and I remove color, which leave a very flat gray image, then I play with the contrast to get it more true b&w, but I'm wondering if that's the best way??

I would think the B&G are going to be THRILLED, honestly. I love the variety in close ups, and ones w/ more landscape. I love the mix of b&w and color, and other special effects.

I see what you mean about their lack of connection, it shows a bit in tammy & chris 8, but seriously that's their problem! I've done some photos & friends critiqued with things like "his smile looks weird" or "she looks heavy". Um, how is that my problem? That's how he smiles, and she is beautiful, but 300 pounds- my camera isn't magic, ya know!

Anyways, super lovely job. And I'll be anxious to see the pics from Africa!!

Hi Denyse- thanks so much! If the pic is a bit out of focus (!!) I tend to use the OptikVerve filter and play around with High Key, I then sometimes do back in PS (got Elements4) and add a bit of contrast etc., I also play around with the dodge and burn tool - look at Kawla Kelly Haddads gallery for stunning b/w, she said she uses dodge and burn. Another question u guys might answer - I did the wedding for them for free, as the brides mom is a very old friend of mine. I've given her the pix on a low res CD for them to choose prints - which they know will be for their account - now.... do I make a bit on these, or do I do it at cost. In my heart I feel the groom should pay (he drives quite a flashy car and I think is a bit pompous!) I've spent weeks and weeks every night on these pix, till I was squint and my shoulders needed physio - so I feel I would at least like to make something out of the prints? I agree with you about it being their problem - they weren't the most co-operative, and I warned them they wouldn't get nice pix - I think what I salvaged is ok, but sheeees I took about 800 or 900!!!!
Will start the Kruger Park pix tonight and hopefully work on them over the weekend. My boyfriend is away working in Chad, and they've just had a military coup!!! So hold thumbs!!
