Photography Question

Steven Gunnerson

Print Pricing

I was wondering about print pricing because I am new to selling prints. Often times I see BP photographers selling their 8x10, or 8x12, prints for like $5-$15 each. I find this surprising, but then many times I also see that they call their prints "Fine Art" which amazes me. This price seems exceedingly low to me and I wouldn't consider selling a print this size for under $50 or my "Fine Art" prints for under $100. And I consider my prices low... So I guess my question is why are so many people here selling their prints so inexpensively?

I think it's largely because either the quality of their work is marginal at best. Or, perhaps it's just because they don't know any better and they're trying to improve the odds for making a sale even if they just break even on the deal.

When I was first starting out, way back when, I learned a very valuable lesson from another photographer. He taught me that over-pricing the work and demonstrating its value was much better than under-pricing in order to sell something. A nicely printed, properly mounted and even simply framed print at a high price, as a fine-art print that you mentioned, is going to sell a lot better than a 8x10 low resolution digital print in an individual zip loc baggie.
