Photo Contest Judges I was wondering, if when the judges are looking at the entries for that month, if they enlarge the thumbnails? A lot of the entries don't show detail until they are enlarged. Thanks Charlene (hopefully one of the judges can answer this question)

I just looked at the guidlines, and couldn't find it. But if I remember correctly it does say somewhere that they do look at every photo enlarged(Imagine looking at 25000 enlarged pics a month!).

Just my 2 cents, probably not right. Out of the 25000 say, I bet they can tell straight away what needs to be binned, what doesn't have it. They can pretty much cull those straight away, then I reckon the enlarge the rest to get a better look.

Would still love an answer from the judges..... are the thumbnails enlarged for picking the finalists, etc. Thanks Charlene

I don't think they look at the pictures like we do here on the website.Jim said once that the judges don't see the name of the author of the photograph so they must have a special programm to look at...and for my opinion a serious photographer wouldn't judge a thumbnail :O) p.s. I wouldn't expect an answer of a judge .. I don't think they read those threads....

A pie contest some can be bad enough you know right away. But you're going to have to taste them eventually.

I don't know how the judging works, but I would think they'd about have to look at a full size pic to get an idea of how the image really looks. I've seen thumbnails I thought looked awesome then when I opened the full size photo it turned out to be something a lot less than awesome. Sometimes too a thumbnail can give you a pretty accurate idea of whether the photo stinks or not.

Still no confidence? Seems like it would go without asking. Wouldn't it be similar to a contest with printed photos asking if judging is done from across the room or is it done looking up close? Isn't just a continuation of still not being satisfied with which photos are chosen. Seems the most one could ever expect is to be in agreement with most of the ones picked. And if that's the case, can you really expect much else?

Gregory,I am not criticizing the pictures being picked....... I am only asking a very simple question, which would require a very simple yes or no!!!

Greg, I agree with Charlene that she's not criticizing. The reson that we are curious is that for example, I've got a pic in my gallery that as a thumbnail looks like a weed. When you enlarge it, you can tell it's not a weed, you can see some other red and yellow flowers in the background and the edge of a lake. So we're just wondering if it's even worth entering these types of pics into the contest.

BTW, if you're wondering which one I'm talking about, I just named it "Not a Weed."

Personally, I can't quite imagine a legitimate judging process that would be based on thumbnails. There just isn't enough "image" to go on, at that size, and too often the thumbnail reduction leads to a "moire-like" visual line vibration.

And with common sense, and just general knowledge of not only how photos are viewed for a contest, but how photos are viewed just in general, what would make you think that they are not viewed in whole? Just in general when somebody wants to take a close look at a photo, they approach it physically, or if it's on the web they view it a full display. That's common sense. Give them a little credit for being able to do that. With the pie example, would you really need to ask if the judging is based on actually tasting the pies?

Gregory...I know you can't help being scarcastic....but don't you think that 25,000 photos would be quite time consuming???? so, the question still remains and it's a simple one..... do the judges open the thumbnails during all their processes of judging. That is why they have a q&a on this site. For questions to be asked...this is really rather easy..yes or no!!!!! And I think I'm entitled, whether you approve or not Gregory, to ask a question.....

Sarcasm would be to say no they just throw darts at the screen. It's a photo contest. Obviously it takes time because they take over a month to announce the winners. And if it's not out exactly on the 14/15th, you have several threads started about where are the winners, they need more judges, yada yada. Much bigger contest are judge by looking at closely at photos. Granted it needs to be an initial hook to it. You're not going to have any contest where a judge takes a couple days to decide whether a photo advances. The weather man has a phone, but do you call him to know which way the wind is blowing?

Gregory, I really enjoy your humor. I know the finalists won't be announced til at least the 20th of the month. Why do you care that I'm asking this question? It seems to bother you.

You've used how many excalmation marks, and I'm the one that's bothered? You jumped to the topic of the announcement date. It's because it goes right along with somebody who says they're confused about which category to put a picture of a bird in, when in the same paragraph, they mention they know full well about the animal category. Or a corn field, when they know about landscape/nature. If that keeps coming up, there's a good chance I may ask, how in the world are you not seeing that.

And maybe I didn't bring it up directly enough, but what is it that made you think they're possibly only going by thumbnails? You said you're concerned about detail not being seen in just the thumbnail. Which sounds like you're worried about a photo not being advanced because, unless it's view fully, it's going to get passed over. When if it were viewed fully, it wouldn't be passed over.

I have no idea if they do or don't...therefore the original question.

Are you wanting to know because you think photos are being passed over because they're not viewed in full?
|

Charlene Bayerle |
I do think that....(and I am not speaking about mine...I figured that's what you are thinking). I have looked at a lot of the thumbnails and when I open them, it's really then, that you can see the detail. And I do think it's important to open them, and I do understand that 25,000 must be overwhelming for the judges, but at the same time, I do think it's important.

Which goes right back to it is a continuation of the wrong pictures are being chosen, which you said it wasn't, so the judges must be overwhelmed, or they're possibly only looking at thumbnails. So come right out and say it. And I do think they have the moxy to make any necessary changes if they are being overwhelmed in any areas. And that comes back to you can't realistically expect more than agreeing with most of the ones chosen. And if you can't even do that, then I guess it will eventually progress to wanting to know recent results from optimologist visits.

LOL!! You are very amusing Gregory. I never said the wrong photos are being chosen. I just asked a very simple question...yes or no answer... are you one of the judges Gregory?

Q-"Are you wanting to know because you think photos are being passed over because they're not viewed in full?" R-"I do think that...." Now you're saying you don't. I'll try to maintain faith in the human condition.

I have not said that the wrong pictures are being selected....many of mine have been selected....I'm not complaining, Im asking a question. And you're looking for an argument. Good night Gregory....I'm tired of typing. Have a nice holiday!!!

Hi Charlene, The judging for contest images is done on large versions of the images, not the thumbnails. Thanks-Heather Young
