52mm -Any type will work?

I'm a beginner so this may be sound like a "stupid" question. I bought a 52mm lens adapter in order to use a telephoto lens, filters etc. I see a lot of ads saying for instance "52mm telephoto lens for the Canon model xxx or Sony xxx camera." What confuses me is if a lens has 52mm mounting threads, and thus screws on to my lens adapter, won't it work on my camera also? Ditto for filters etc.

As far as I know, it should work. The only reason that it would say it is for a Canon xxx or Sony xxx model, is it that it is made by Canon or Sony.

Back in the older days George, long before I could afford Nikkor or Zeiss lenses, lens distributors asked you to specify the camera you intended to use their lens on. That way, they could provide and attach a rear lens mount that would work with that particular camera. In other words, one size may fit all cameras with the proper lens mount.

Whether the same mount is truly interchangable with say Sony and Canon both, I don't know. But I'll bet the guys who can tell you are at http://www.bhphotovideo.com. Just drop camera sales an e-mail and you'll get a response.

It may be that if these lens mounts are different, you can buy both and when you need the other, attach it yourself after removing the other one. It's usually just a couple of screws or it's threaded on the lens.

BTW, a 52mm is not a telephoto. In 35mm parlance, it's essentially a "normal" lens, as opposed to a wide angle or the telephotos.

Take it light.
Mark

Mark, I think what George means is that he bought a 52mm adapter that will clip onto the end of his lens(he's using a P&S without any threads on the lens) so he can use filters and other screw on accessories.

  George,
These are eBay auctions you're looking at, right? Some sellers will put the brand or model of a camera (or multiple cameras) in the description of their auction so that their item will pop up when people do a search for the camera.

Suppose you're looking for a Canon Powershot G5. If you search eBay for "Canon G5", most of the auctions that pop up will actually be for batteries that fit the G5. You'll see batteries, chargers, cases, auxiliary lenses, even tripods that say they are for the Canon G5.

Most of these items, of course, can fit many cameras. They just list them that way to get them to show up on more searches.

Chris
