Photography Question

Dan Walsh

Trade Organizations

I am looking into joining a photography trade organization. My business will be stock photography and photography tours. I am deciding between ASMP and PPA. Can anyone who has been a member of one or both give me some insight into the organizations?
Thanks, Dan

Well, I once looked at and considered PPofA. At the time, I felt they were more like studio owners and did a lot of wedding work and portraits. I joined ASMP since by trade, I'm a photojournalist. I also joined NPPA (National Press Photographers Ass'n).

You can't just join either one. They have a fairly strict membership policy that helps assure new members are truly working professional photographers. Recent tear sheets is one criteria for ASMP along with the recommendation(s) of a member(s) who review your work prior to submitting your application.

In my view, ASMP is the best group of professionals I've chosen to be associated with. I'm proud of their work in the photographic community and their pro-active stance on legal issues including copyright amendments and usage agreements. Their publications, btw, are first rate. So, if you can meet the qualifications, I'd recommend ASMP.org. Oh, there are also different levels of membership from assistant to associate to full voting, etc. And for that the dues structure is proportionate.

And don't join strictly for a blurb on your resume. Join for the sake of wanting to contribute and participate in a truly professional organization dedicated to media photography. Otherwise, maybe PPofA might be a better choice for ya. Seewhatimeanhuh?
Mark.
