Photography Question

Online photo labs

I need to get some real pictures made.

I been getting away with printing them on the printer.

I did some of a boy for prom where the mom want real pictures made not prints off the computer. Plus I did some images for the young mans senior portfolio.

Keshia mom wants portfolio images done for Keshia's modeling book.

I am not going to beable to get away with printing them off the computer.

What labs do you use where the colors and pictures are outstanding. I need the portfolio ones to be larger and really nice for Keshia's model book.

Do I upsize them in photoshop before I send to a lab?

I basicly have not done this before and needs some advice.

Mpix has done a wonderful job for me -- and very easy to use, even the first time out ...

Thank you very much.

I am going to try this mpix out. I signed up with their company tonight.

I just know I need to do something different than printing the pictures off the computer.

  Hi Mark

Thank you. I look at both of these photo labs.

I have another question.

I know I need something really professional done for Keshia's modeling portfolio.

To get a Portfolio sized image what MB size or dimensions would I have to upsize to in photoshop to get a larger sized image printed for a modeling portfolio?

Why thanks Kerby !! You too are both a gentleman AND a scholar. Good idea on writing to the labs about resolution.

BTW, you know the postal service has a new program to allow individuals to make and use their own stamps? Weren't you asking about doing stamps? Maybe it was Brendan. Can't recall. Must be near dinner time. LOL !!
Be well.

  Hi Mark,

I am lady.

I had 35 different photoballs made into stamps by zazzle. They do an excellent job and the stamps are BIG.

I want to submit them to the US postal committee for consideration for real US postage stamps. The photo balls are different and you never know if they like them or not.

I out of town on business but I get home tomorrow and will write to the labs about size to submit the images of Keshia for her modeling portfolio and the young man I doing the high school senior portfolio for.

Thank you so much for letting me know about the labs. These will the first images I had made into real pictures and not prints off the computer.

There is a super article/comparison charts of online photo labs in the new May 2006 issue of Popular Photography -- very helpful.

I was looking at the mpix company......

their color prints on the Kodak paper, has anyone used this? I see it says Matte finish. Is this not the typical photo surface you'd get say if you took it to a photo lab to get developed?

Has anyone used the Metallic paper? It sounds interesting.

Kerby- your question about sizing for larger prints... I don't know the minimum size to recommend, but when I go large (11x14 or bigger) I always shoot on my highest setting & give it to the printer without resizing at all. I figure the bigger the file the better the print will be. (my camera is a 8megapixel, my largest file size seems to be around 3.5mb)

Aingeal- I just heard about metallic paper yesterday when I dropped off something at my camera store, I haven't tried it yet. Typical photo surface can be Matte or Glossy. My camera store also offers a Professional paper called Endura Porta which has a matte finish.

How matte though? I like when you take your photos say to Wal-Mart or wherever and you get the standard glossy prints.

Let me know what the Metallic looks like if you see it.

I've never used this particular service, but matte & glossy are totally different finishes. Glossy is well, just that- shiney. Matte is more dull... if you've seen a professional portrait, it's similar to that. (although they are probably using a higher grade paper, like portra, they are still matte finish)

I have to pick up a print on monday, I'll ask if they have a sample of a print on the metallic paper.

I emailed the company and asked about the Metallic paper. Here is what they said.......

Kodak Professional Metallic paper - glossy finish. For a small premium you can upgrade your paper to our new Kodak Endura Metallic paper. Metallic paper features a unique pearlescent surface. It is incredibly strong and highly resistant to tearing. The paper is highly saturated and has a unique, almost three dimensional appearance. Images with bright, bold colors or a lot of blacks, silvers, chromes or gold are truly spectacular on this paper. However, you probably would not choose it for a traditional portrait with soft lighting and old masters background.

Please do let me know what it looks like if you get a chance to see a sample. But I think this is what I would go with for glossy.

Save you a trip to the store, the said Mpix, Adoramapix, and Shutterfly as the best of the ten they tried. Adorama better at uploading tiff files. Those three are the only that did poster size with good results. Mpix was slight favored of the top three overall. And the worst, dot something(dotphoto or dotpix) and...

Wal-Mart?!!

Mpix is great except for their canvases. They will send you a free sample of all three of their Kodak papers including the metallic....it is very different and I personally love it. It makes your photos just pop!!!

Aingeal - I just got a friend's daughter's senior pictures in an announcement and knew right away that they were on that metallic paper, which I also had been curious about but hadn't seen for myself. Her black and white photo had a colored red rose and it did look very cool, but I didn't care for the full color ones. It's hard to explain, they just looked kind of, I don't know, weird; although I could see how some images would look awesome printed on metallic paper. They had her portraits taken at Glamour Shots, so if you're near one of their studios, it would be a good place to take a look. - Laura

I have an 11 x 14 print of my son and I in the metallic finish. The portrait is black and white, as well. It looks really awesome, but I didn't like the color prints on metallic. It looks much better in black and white or sephia.
