How to shoot baseball game at night?

I have been asked to shoot a varsity baseball game that will be at night. I am not allowed to use a flash. I have a Nikon D70 and D200. I tried practicing last night (with the D70) at a game and cannot seem to get any good shots. My lens was a 70-300mm. I tried shooting in manual, sports and night programs. All pics were blurred (was using a monopod) or lighting was not correct. Any help on how to do this type of shoot would be appreciated. I have to shoot the game on Friday night. Thank you.

Becky, you are in a quandry - this is just a matter of there not being enough light. (Flash wouldn't help anyway - the players would be too far away for it to make a difference).

Since you cannot increase the light, and you absolutely need to use a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action, you only have two options:

Increase the ISO setting of the camera to maximize the sensitivity - 800 or even 1600 - if you haven't already. The higher ISO means more noise in the shots, but at least they'll be sharper thanks to higher shutter speeds.

If that doesn't do it, then the last alternative is to use a faster lens. Your 70-300 is f5.6 at the 300MM end, right? Well, if you can find/steal/rent/borrow a 300MM f2.8 lens then at least that gives you two more stops of light (that is, 4 times as much light) you will likely have enough light gathering power to get some good shots.

This is why you see the pro shooters at sporting events with those ginormous lenses - the extra speed of the f2.8 can make a huge difference in these circumstances.

Bob, thank you for the response. I will try the ISO setting first. I have my youngest son's game tonight that I can practice with and see how well that will work. Thanks again.
