Portrait Venture! I was intending on venturing into the Portrait industry - I have some ideas of what to do, but I'm stuck when it comes to posing. A lady friend of mine is willing to help me out by acting as a model, but I would appreciate some help in how to set up a shoot, what sort of poses I should do, and which are the most successful. I have been looking at other people's portrait photos, but it's quite an arduous process considering how slow my internet is. If there is one key idea, then please let me know! Thanks very much for your help! Travis

The keys are keeping the background simple, the lighting dramatic, and try to get the personality of the subject to show in the shot (much easier said than done). Do those three things and you will steps above the competition. Two very good online resources are imaging-resource.com and zuga.net's photo page. Imaging Resources page is sponsered by Photoflex lighting and has numerous tutorials about portrait posing and lighting. Zuga.net's photo page is the home of none other than Monte Zucker. a true portrait master if there ever was one. Again, tons of articles and video clips about portraiture. Monte also writes a very good column in Shutterbug, which should be archived on their website. If all that info doesn't satisfy your needs, a straight google search for "portrait posing" will get you about 1/2 a million hits to sort through. I also cut images out of magazines when I come across a unique pose, then paste them into a 3-ring binder as a reference.
