How to shoot silhouettes with a digital camera

Okay, i'm doing a project for my photography class and I'm not exactly sure how to go about taking a silhouette with my digital camera because the one that I have I don't know how I did it and I did it with a 35 mm. Can someone helpe me please thanks :)

Hi Ashleigh! Is it a digital SLR, or a point & shoot camera?

Like with any other camera. Light background, subject in shadow.
Hope this helps.
Bob

Bob- definately an example of it, but is asking HOW to do it.

If you have an SLR I was going to give you step by step instructions. (it's how I made this image)

But regardless, basically you have to get the camera's meter to read the lightest part of the picture. Then it will make the object dark (it will underexpose it).

Let me know about your camera & maybe I can help more. I used to have the same problem as you- sometimes I'd get a good silhouette, but I didn't know how I did it!

Both explanations are pretty much complete regardless of camera make or model.

It took a much more detailed explaination for my brain to really GET it, lol.

umm I think it's pretty much just a point and shoot.

I don't see any reason a P&S would work any differently than a DSLR or a SLR for a silhouette shot.

Bob, I think we'll have to come up with a different "edge." :D

My only reason for asking if it was a P&S or DSLR was you have control of the aperture settings, etc w/ the DSLR, so no point in my giving more detailed info about that if it's a P&S.

Aim your camera at the lightest part of your picture, and press the button 1/2 way and hold it like that, then move to get the object in view that you want to silhouette & click. That should hold the meter to the light part, which should make your object silhouette. You guys agree?

  That would work, too.
I turned my camera on in "P" mode (which is no different basically from "auto" 'cept the flash won't go off), grabbed the pole, held it up, pointed the camera straight at the reel and pushed the button....:-)
