he stopped down. looks like an ultra wide lens at possiblly f/8, f/11-ish...or he could've used a digi cam which have tremendous dof. I can shoot my wife's powershot a520 and have dof from 5-6 feet ahead to infinity at like 2.8. but all he did was stop down

I believe that Justin is right. This was probably a 28mm film lens or a 20mm digital lens moved in close to the main subject. You can tell by the exaggerted distortion in the front boys face. You see this technique a lot in National Geographic. Wide angles will give you much greter depth of field than a normal or telephoto lens. A friend of mine uses this fun technique for taking pet portraits, as it exaggerates their facial features. Just don't get so close that fido licks your lens!
