Photography Question

Robyn Mackenzie

How much to charge?

I took quite a few images of some spectacular "fish" on the Yarra River in Melbourne, which were a central part of the Commonwealth Games which have just finished here. (I have a couple on my BP website, and many more on my smugmug photosharing site). I've just received an email from the creative director of the event, wanting to use some of my images as gifts for their volunteers, and on their website. He asks how I would like to go about payment for this.

I have never sold a photo before, and don't know what's a fair thing. I will be speaking to the director this afternoon.

Any advice would be welcome!!! PS: I'm VERY happy!

Robyn this is a very subjective subject. Because an 8 x 10 print from Jane Doe is not worth much but an 8 x 10 print from Joyce Tenneson is worth thousands. Not to say you are a jane Doe but the value of prints vary with the reputation of the artist.

But you have one great thing going for you, the person likes and wants your photos! You mentioned he wants to give prints as gifts. So I assume he does not have access to your files that are large enough to make nice prints, so you are in control. If I were you I would make a price list of some different size prints such as 4 x 6, 8 x 10, 11 x 14 and 16 x 20 (if the files are big enough) and take an order from him and have the prints made and send them to him. This way you can be sure of the quality of the prints. You can even mat them and sign them if you want.

As far as price goes as a beginner, I suggest you charge 3-5 times your cost of the print (and matting if you mat them) plus shipping. This will cover your time and some of your trouble. If you are printing your own it would be much more than the 3-5 times amount. I suggest you base the 3-5 times amount on what a custom lab would charge for a print.

I hope this helps.
