Night shooting

When I get my shots, I normally favor natural light...always have...I hate to use flash I don't know why...well, Im am going to shoot a wedding that will start at 6pm, I am not their "main" photog but I do want great shots...so any advice...I know I'll use my tripod, with a slower shutter but any more advice to give?

  Hi Rhonda;

Welcome to betterphoto.com.

You don't say when the wedding is, but it's getting to be the time of year when lighting should not be a problem if it's an outdoor wedding. If it's indoor, You'll have problems.

A flash is the topic of debate for many photographers. A flash definately has it's place in photography. Every photographer I know uses one to some extent.

Using a tripod can have good and bad consequences at a wedding. To use slower shutter speeds also has the same effect. By using a slower shutter speed, you run the risk of an important shot, simply the action. Take a Jewish wedding when the bride and groom stomp on the goblet. The action alone can blur the shot. This may or may not make a good print. That's not a chance I'm willing to take.

The reception is another place where a flash is most likely warranted. Lots of action. You may want to get comfortable using one. I hate to say it, but I most often use one at weddings. It's rare when I don't. I even use fill flash when shooting daylight weddings.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark H.
