Nikon D70 General Purpose Zoom Lens

Hi. I have a friend at work that has the Nikon D70 digital SLR camera.
He's using the standard kit lens that came with the camera. He wants
to upgrade to a higher quality and faster lens and doesn't mind spending
over $1000. He's seen reviews on the AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
lens. He likes the mm range of the lens--17-55mm.

But I'm wondering if there may be a better lens, or maybe even a 3rd party lens like Sigma, that you'd recommend. Or one that has Image Stabilization.

I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

The hot lens right now is the Nikon 18-200mm AF-S DX VR II. VR being "vibration reduction", Nikon's brand of image stabilization. The lens goes for about $750, if you can find it.

The 18-200 vr Isnt A Fast Lens Its A 3.5- 5.6, Its Popular Because Its A vr And You Can Handhold It A Few Extra Stops, If Your Wanting A Fast Quiet Lens The 17/55mm 2.8 is A Much Better Choice If Thats The Focal Length You Need, And It Is A Match Made In Heaven Combined With The D70 Remarkably Sharp And Very Fast Ken..
